IF you need older versions of apps for your older device, there are two ways of getting them.
The first and easiest way is to download the newest app to a newer iDevice, first.
Then go back to your older iDevice, download the newest version of the app, once again, and if the developer/s has/have left an older, compatible version of their app/s on Apple's app servers, then you will receive a small window pop-up prompt that states that there is an older version of the app that is compatible with your device.. Would you like to download this version now.
Tap the OK button just below the prompt to start the downloading of the older app version to your iPad.
If you need apps for your older iDevice, if you have a computer with an older version of iTunes (version 12.6.4 or earlier ), you can try downloading the recent app/s, by accessing the iOS App Store, through iTunes, and then, download the recent version of the app/s you like to use on your older iDevice to iTunes on your computer, FIRST.
IF you own a computer with an older version of iTunes already on it, try using that version as an older iDevice does not need the latest iTunes version.
If you have a computer, but NO iTunes on it, here is a link to the older 12.6.3 version for download found in this Apple weblink.
Older versions of iTunes found here.
https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes
iTunes 12.6.4 here.
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208079
DO NOT download OR USE the latest version of iTunes (version 12.7.x) as there is no more support for saving apps in iTunes under the most recent versions.
If you have already downloaded the recent 12.7.x version of iTunes, NONE of what I have wriiten here in this post reply may work!
You will need to use an older iTunes version and once it is downloaded and installed on your computer, at launch, hold down the Opt/Alt key on your keyboard while launching this older iTunee version, so you can create a new Tunes library.
BEFORE DOING the IMMEDIATELY ABOVE, if you use iTunes on a computer and already have an iTunes Library, you will need to find the iTunes Library folder on your computer and, temporarily, move/copy this folder to another location so you do not accidentally write over your existing current iTunes library.
Then, back on your older iDevice, you can try to download the latest app from the iOS App Store and if the developer/s has/have left an older, compatible version of their app/s on Apple's app servers, then you will receive a small window pop-up prompt that states that there is an older version of the app that is compatible with your device.. Would you like to download this version now.
Tap the OK button just below the prompt to start the downloading of the older app version to your iDevice.
If you are successful in getting apps on this iPad, consider looking for more “up to date”, third party iOS web browsers for that version of iOS.
Some third party web browser developers supported their web browser on iOS 9.3.5 and are more up to date than the over two year old iOS version of the Safari Web Browser.
If you use iTunes on a computer, some third party iOS web browsers that may still have older versions for iOS 9.3.5.

Dolphin Web browser
iCab Mobile Web browser
Maven Web Browser
Opera Web browser
Maxthon Web browser
Good Luck to You!
this is untrue. i was running netflix on an ipad 3 running 9.3.5 and i wiped it to give it to my mother, but she could not download it as apple does not allow older versions to be downloaded for new users. it is part of the planned obsolescence.
You absolutely CAN family share with different apple IDs. I added my friend’s kids to my family share (they had to approve my request). After our families were linked they were able to follow my directions above and get Netflix on their ipad 4s from my sons ipad2. It literally took me 5 minutes....and they are happily watching Netflix!
I use my ipad mini mk1 as a bedside alarm clock. There are so many apps that are no longer available for 32bit that its almost obsolete. I even tried to download an Agatha Christie ibook but it said ios12 or later.
Bought a mk4 mini.
That procedure works just fine for users who already own a copy of the Netflix app or any other app.
It gets much more complicated when you are trying to obtain a new, but older version of Netflix, or any app, that has updated its minimum iOS requirement above what the older iDevice is capable of running.
Unless you have a device which is capable of running iOS 11 or higher, you won't be able to download Youtube. Most apps by now have moved on to 64 bit technology. Devices frozen at iOS 9.3.5 are incapable of running 64 bit apps.
I found an old version of Netflix that runs on 9.3.5. I can share a copy with you if you need it
That won’t work, IF, you do not own a newer Apple device to do this with.
That is why I keep posting my procedures using an older version of iTunes on a computer.
The ipad mini will not run ios 11.
its kinda the pretext of the whole thread.
If you need the advantages of the newer iOS levels, then it's time to get a newer iPad capable of running those levels.
Strange.
I was getting iOS 10 updates from Netflix up until very recently.
I see the very latest version of Netflix has gone totally all iOS 11, now.
Not sure if this means that Netflix has finally decided to remove all of their past older versions, or not, though.
If you already downloaded an older app for your older iDevice under your own Apple ID and password, then the re-downloading of that older version is very easy.
It is when you never had the app to begin with and/or setting up an older iDevice as new with a new Apple ID and password that getting the older version of a newer iOS compatible app becomes more difficult.
By the way when you get that iPad 2 back for your Grandson to use, it is best to set up that iPad with his own Apple ID and password, if he us going to be the main user of this iPad.
That means that if there are any apps that have moved on to iOS 10 and/or 11, an older version of an app must now be gotten using the two possible methods I meticulously outlined here in my previous replies in this posting or from my link here in the Apple Support Community user tips.
Downloading Older iOS 9.3.5 Versions of Apps ONLY Available Now for iOS 10 or Later
If your Grandson plays a lot of popular games on an iPad, you may find that some of the more popular game developers purposely move their games ahead to new iOS versions and and three things may happen.
The game developers remove their older game versions from the iOS App Store servers, discontinue any support and/or completely disable the functionality of the older versions of their games.
Good Luck to You!
That procedure is already in my comprehensive link in my post 6 replies above yours.
There are actually three ways to get an older iOS App for older iDevices as I have outlined in my posted reply link that I have been posting in these iPad/iPhone communities for the past 2 years, or so.
This ONLY works. IF you have a newer iDevice to do this!
If you don't ( and many iPad users don't seem to have/own newer iDevices ) you need to use my older iTunes method on a computer to accomplish this.
Absolutely agree. It’s a fact that 32bit ipads are obsolete. They set a trend back in the day, but now they just don’t cut it. Mine can barely browse let alone watch online movies.
I think some of the frustration can be laid at the superb build quality of ipads and it seems such a pity that something with such a beautiful feel in the hand is now obsolete. I take that as a compliment to the designers. But that’s modern life. Progress brings obsolescence and a great excuse to upgrade.
Mine makes a great bedside clock.
If you want a better performing older iPad, try all on my tips in this link below.

Try all of these tips and leave each tip active together. Do not simply try every tip individually, expecting just one tip to be a performance “cure all”.
Many of these tips are designed to work together to help improve overall iOS/iDevice performance.
I still use my 8-year old iPad 2 everyday and it is still receiving regular app updates, albeit, fewer of them as time has passed.
For an 8-year old device, it is still working reasonably smooth and performance is better than average for this device with uneccessary items toggled OFF or disabled.
I would STOP using that 3-year old Safari Web browser, as it is, probably, not safe and secure to use any longer, and seek out a third party web browser that is STILL currently being updated and STILL being supported on iOS 9.3.5.
Here are a few third party web browsers that I know are STILL being updated and supported on iOS 9.
Popular third party, iOS 9 and earlier compatible Web browsers are more quickly dwindling, now.
Older iOS devices and users had about a dozen popular and regularly updated, well known and secure, third party Web browsers to choose from at one time.
We are down to seven, now.
Here’s what’s left.
iCab Mobile Web browser
Dolphin Web browser
Dolphin Incognito Web browser
Aloha Web browser
Snow Bunny Web browser
Private Browsing Web browser
Maxthon Web browser
Possibly, changing Web browsers may help with your online banking issue by still being able to actually use the banking Website, instead of the app.
Good Luck to You!
