Airport express connection issues

I have an Airport Express that is connected to a over the air internet access via a PoE adapter (see Casair internet service). When I connect the airport to the internet and set everything up it wants me to change my mode to bridge mode rather than DHCP / Nat. I'm not sure why it wants me to do this, but when I do this the internet connection is very imprecise and doesn't work on all devices. When I try to select DHCP / Nat it seems to work, and the airport utility says that there's internet and router connectivity, but when I attempt to access the internet on my computer and my phone (both apple products) I get a log in screen for an asus router. The internet company denies any issues and blames the apple router. Apple is not sure what to do. any suggestions?

over the air internet access

These services are usually based on private IP addressing.

If you connect a computer directly to the EoP adapter (I am guessing you are using EOP not POE).. by ethernet I predict your computer will get an address 10.x.x.x

Please do have a go. If my prediction is correct the problem is caused by the use of very similar private IP ranges.

What you then need to do is actually double NAT to protect your network from whoever has the Asus. I suspect the ISP has not given much thought to security and is allowing devices on their service to interact.

You need to change the IP addressing of the Express to another range. Usually 192.168.x.x which you do via the airport utility.. network options.

Select the 192.168 option and then see if it works.. You will get a double NAT error but that is par for the course when you use these wireless internet services.

AirPort Utility is likely detecting that you have another device on the network.....(it might be your "modem" or something similar).....that is also providing NAT service.

So, if you run the AirPort Express in DHCP and NAT mode, you wind up with two devices both providing NAT service for the same network. That is known as "Double NAT", which you would normally want to avoid, since it can sometimes create possible issues such as slower connections, trouble accessing some websites, and remote access problems with features like Back to My Mac

On the other hand, sometimes you can get away with a Double NAT setup on a simple home network, and things will run just fine. There is actually an upside the Double NAT as well, that is that you have an additional simple firewall between the Internet and your local network.

If the DHCP and NAT setting works well on the AirPort Express, then I would leave it at that setting. AirPort Utility does provide a way to "ignore" the Double NAT notice, so the AirPort will display a green light rather than an annoying blinking amber light.

Sorry, I have no idea why a screen for an Asus router pops up on your network. That might be a question for Asus support. Ask them under what conditions the log in screen will pop up.

The bottom line.....what works best for you? Whatever that might be, that is the best setup for your network.

The only way I get access to the internet on the airport is through bridge mode.

Thanks for the clarification on that.

When I run it in DHCP I get a prompt to log into an asus router (I have no asus equipment on my network and my ISP claims they don't either).

Another user near you may be using the same provider and things can sometimes "leak" from one network to another over what is essentially a shared connection. That is just a guess though.

Otherwise, I have no idea. Perhaps another user will be able to assist.

My advice would be to start a new thread with "Casair" mentioned prominently in the title of the post. That might help to attract the attention of other users who are using the same service who may know more about this and might be able to help.

Good luck.
