Waze and Google Maps are possessed. Please help!

For several years, I have avoided using Google maps, partly because when I’m driving, the map would rotate randomly, facing sideways or completely backwards. I tried recalibrating the compass, tapping the compass icon that toggles true north on and off, quitting the app, reinstalling the app, resetting the phone, restoring the phone and manually reinstalling apps, turning the compass off and back on... Finally I gave up.

Used Waze for the past few years with no problems, but now Waze is doing the same thing. I followed all of the above steps, with no luck. My phone is sitting in a dash mount, and the map will just flip upside down, and my car icon appears as through I’m driving in reverse down whatever road I’m on. Waze constantly tries to reroute me; basically, at that point, the app is unusable.

Here are other guesses I’ve made based on other threads here and elsewhere: perhaps it’s my abysmal data connection that I often get with Sprint; the app can’t keep up with where I actually am, and this problem just cant be fixed. Or, the slight vibrations from my phone being mounting are screwing with the compass and/or the gyrometer. Or, perhaps neither of these apps like the phone being mounted vertically— the problem seems to sometimes resolve itself if I take the phone out of the dash mount and hold it for a few minutes. And FYI, all of this has been on multiple phones (6S and 7).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Interesting. I never liked the interface for Google Maps for navigation, so never really used it. I stopped using Waze and switched to Apple Maps when it gained lane guidance.

Since Apple Maps is working, I would start with deleting and reinstalling the apps. If that doesn't work, contact Google/Waze. I wouldn't be surprised id there is some code sharing between the two apps now resulting in the same problem appearing on both.

I’m with ya on a lot of that. :) I actually use all three. Google Maps for searching for POI (it’s the best, but I don’t like the UI). Waze for getting there (it’s the best for navigation and rerouting around traffic but abysmal at searching, and the UI ***** for anything except following the directions it gives), and Apple Maps for... not searching...not rerouting... really just if I know that it knows where something is and will get me there easily. AM definitely has the best UI, but I’ve ended up in the wrong place too many times. Anyhoo...

I have reinstalled both apps, and yes, you may be on to something. I have contacted Waze support. We shall see what happens. Thanks for your help.
