Two web sites won't load in any Browser

Was reading posts on this forum and saw EtreCheck mentioned several times. On April 6th, I downloaded the app and ran it, mostly out of curiosity. I deleted about six files the app claimed were orphan files unneeded (no I don't remember what they were). The next day I was unable to load either Best Buy or Home Depot web sites with any of my Browsers. Message just says "can't open page". This is for all Browsers (Safari, FireFox and Chrome). This is happening on a 27" iMac running Mavericks. 1 TB HD and 12 GB of RAM. I also have a laptop running Mavericks, and those two web sites open normally with all browsers on the laptop.

I suspect that something was deleted through the EtreCheck app that is causing this. I can't update to Yosemite on my iMac because I use QuarkXpress 9 and Quicken 2007, and Filemaker 11 extensively, and they will not run in Yosemite.

I printed a pdf file of the EtreCheck report generated on April 6th, but think I created the pdf after the deletions were made.

Any suggestions as to how to correct this or what is causing it would be greatly appreciated. I have a vintage iMac, 2.8 GHz, Mid 2010. I have screen shots of the error messages received when I try to access either of these web sites. All other web site load as normal.

I forgot to past the message being shown when I try to access those sites, and this was just now which is after I did a restart in safe mode:

These two same web site are "not" opening on Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Sitting right next to me, I have a laptop on the same system version, and those two web site "do" open in the PowerBook Pro. This just has to have something to do with me running Etrecheck. After running it is when the issue started happening.

I can only run the version of Safari that runs on Mavericks. I explained why I cannot upgrade from Mavericks. I have thousands of dollars of application software on my iMac that I cannot afford to upgrade or I would move up to Yosemite. Besides the fact, I was having no problems until I ran Etrecheck.

This iMac is in my home and I am the administrator. I have a 100 GB cox connection with a DOCSIS 2.1 modem and an Airport Extreme router running a 5 GHz channel. I have no content blockers running. I use Avast and Malwarebytes. Ran both and neither showed any problems. I have run both of these for years, so they are not the problem. This only happened after running Etrecheck on April 6.

I would uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.

I would uninstall Cocktail. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

Eric, I sure appreciate your tenacity in hanging in there with me. It is appreciated. The other guy has not responded again.

Avast has kept me from going to dangerous web sites several times a week (once last night). I have been using it for over 2 years and has never caused a problem... however "I will" temporarily uninstall it (and I also know to uninstall it before I install anything new on the computer). I have not run Coctail for over 5 years now, however I did see the 2 trailing files in the Library/LaunchDaemons and I removed them last night. I also ran the Avast Scan last night and it found 7 infections which I deleted (flashPlayer, NGPlayer, 3 attachments on email and a pdf file).

I run Avast because my brother is Vice President of a Educational Security company in Atlanta (Macs) and that is what they use and re recommended it. It has saved me and many of my clients from accessing dangerous web sites on numerous occasions.

I would "NEVER" run CleanMyMac nor MacKeeper and personally believe they are Malware themselves. I lecture my clients about them constantly. What are your thoughts about me running TeamViewer all the time. I only used it with two people and one of them has passed away. The other is my aunt and we don't really need it much.

Did you see anything else in the EtreCheck report that looked troubling or questionable? It is interesting that I have never had this issue until I ran EtreCheck and deleted about 7 "so called" orphan files that were no longer needed. My problem of not being able to access either of the web sites started immediately after I ran that application and deleted those 7 loose files.

Eric, I uninstalled Avast and Home Depot now loads in all the browsers. BestBuy loads normally in Firefox and Chrome but is a little funky in Safari. I suspect this all occurred as a coincident and that both BestBuy and HomeDepot just updated their browsers on April 6th. Avast must have recognized their certificates changed, and saw them as a threat.

I have been getting a notice from Chase that Safari needs updating, and know I am faced with moving up to Yosemite maybe on my iMac, or using Firefox which I don't like.

Bottom line... THANK YOU SO MUCH for hanging in there with me Eric. You are very much appreciated!

I was also facing this error recently. And While searching about it found a solution which you can also use. It worked for me.

Go to Command Prompt by pressing windows key and X and select Command Prompt.
Now, just paste these commands one by one and after every command hit enter.
Commands: ipconfig /release
ipconfig /all

ipconfig /flushDNS

ipconfig /renew

netsh int ip set DNS

netsh winsock reset

Lastly, just reset your PC or the device and see if it makes any changes.
