VPN and Airport Extreme (802.11n)

I am considering buying this new Airport, but I will need to set up a VPN between it and my work location. Can this device cope with doing that? The old Airport Extreme could not.

Thanks for posting but unfortunately, the solution is the same DMZ solution (security issue) posted earlier. Actually, if you're going to assign your PC as the default host, then port mapping isn't even needed since by assigning your PC as default host opens all ports (hence the security issue). So, I'm not sure why they set you up, but I guess we're still in search of a secure solution.

I'm on the phone with Apple now (awful hold music) so I'll post any fix if one comes about.

If thats the case then you could remove the step for the default host and just set the ports used by VPN to forward to the address you set up a reservation for. That way you're only forwarding a couple ports. I haven't read anything that says by putting the IP in the default host field that it opens everything up--you still have firewalls, etc operating at that location. Anyways, this solution works for me because I only work from home from time-to-time and don't have the machine on full time.

Good luck but I don't think you'll get any more information than what has been made available in the MANY MANY posts above. Everyone is just restating the same message given by Apple each time....nothing new here just a little better formatted for someone who wants to do this for themselves.

Spoke to apple support several times over last two days. The apple product specialist who swore he could fix the issue without throwing pc into the DMZ, couldnt do it. Never had this happen - always been able to fix. Really, that's what he said.

Frustrating thing is that he keeps acting like this is something isolated to Nortel - which as many of you know, it's not. I keep telling him it's more than just Nortel and he keeps dropping comments like "apple will have to get with Nortel."

Anyway, I URGE you to call in and not sit on the sidelines waiting for a fix. Call Apple, get to a PRODUCT SPECIALIST (not the first person, not the second person, but the third person) and make them open a case so that we put pressure on them to fix.

Man, finally! Updated the firmware and set up the AEBS as the sole wireless provider in the house and the Nortel VPN works as it should. Also, something that's nice, is the range or output (as measured in % in the strength meter) is much better among the other Macs as well. Before the firmware update they were connected to the AEBS-N and showed only a 50% strength, now they show 100%. I'll see if the issue with the HP colorjet printer is fixed as well. Now, what the heck do I do with the old AEBS? 🙂 Thanks to everyone who kept up the pressure with Apple Support.

A note about my setup and what's working for me. I have the new AE base station with 7.1 firmware and on the client PC, I have the Cisco VPN client for Windows. I did the usual stuff on the AirPort utility to assign my PC a "permanent" address and changed the default network to the 192.168 scheme instead of 10.0... I also set my PC up as the default host (not happy about that, for sure). Then I went to the pc, fired up the cisco vpn client, selected "modify" under the "connection entries" menu and, in the transport tab, I unchecked the box that enables transparent tunneling. Before making all these changes I was not able to use MSFT IM and remote desktop- now it's all good. But Apple still needs to fix this. Pretty lousy that my crappy linksys box did this just fine and the new AE station can not.

multiple macs Mac OS X (10.4.9) also have a corporate PC
