VPN and Airport Extreme (802.11n)

I am considering buying this new Airport, but I will need to set up a VPN between it and my work location. Can this device cope with doing that? The old Airport Extreme could not.

My Wife is having the same problem who uses the Nortel VPN client, however, I use the Checkpoint VPN Client. It worked with no changes to AEBS. For now I might have no choice but to try the default host fix. For those of you who also employ that fix make sure you enable a Windows Firewall or some other product. The Nortel VPN Client when active if I remember will protect the PC but only when connected.

Well, I figured out why my posting on a "proposed solution" to this VPN mess had worked, but it is not a fix. My setup is: Cable Modem > AEBSg > AEBSn (bridge mode). So when I connect my XP laptops to the wireless connection of the AEBSn, the VPN does connect, even in both machines running at the same time. For clarification, the XP laptops connect in g frequency, since the AEBSn is in configured in the b/g/n mode. So I thought that was it. However, as soon as I remove the "old" AEBSg out of the setup, the "solution" seems to vanish. I checked several times to ensure that I was not accidentally connected wirelessly to the "old" router while doing this, and for extra security my wireless networks have different names. We will just have to wait until Apple releases a firmware update...

Regarding the light staying Amber even though internet was working...I had same issue. Until I installed the utility and completely ran the setup, the green light would not come on even though I could get to the internet. ONce I ran the setup, the light went from Amber to Green.

I too have the Nortel Contivity issue - this is HUGE. The specs on this router clearly state that it allows VPN passthrough. Why can't I access port forwarding, etc. in the settings? I can't believe I'm saying this but my DLINK with it's web interface was MUCH MORE user friendly than this new Apple n router with it's AIrport Utility. I thought apple was supposed to be easier????

Anyway, Apple - you need to fix this ASAP or I, and many others, will be returning this router asap.

Hi All,

Same problem with VPN access on a very tightly-screwed down PC from my wife's employeer. They use Drive (iPass) and I have not options on how this computer is configured.

In any case, I have resolved the problem with the default host fix and the mac address pre-assignment to an IP address. Spliting the n and g network, while an excellent idea in preparing for AppleTV, did nothing to solve the problem.

Thanks for the great coverage on this problem and for all the help!!!

I have not managed to get the Apani VPN software to work with my corporte email using the airport extreme 802.11n. (It worked fine with the older airport extreme). I see others have had the same problem. A suggested fix from earlier in this discussion says:

In Airport Utility, double-click on the AEBS. In the popup window, click on Internet. Then click on NAT. Check "Enable default host" and set the IP address to what the AEBS has given to your mac.

My question is, how do I know what IP address AEBS has given to my mac? When I click "Enable default host at:" in the NAT, the address 10.0.1.253 appears. Is that correct? Also, do I have to disable DHCP and if so, how do I do that?
