Cancel sending messages in Mail

Apple Mail version 9.3 on OS X 10.11.16

The status on Mail persistently displays "Sending Message _ Mb" when I do not expect or want any messages to be sent. These stuck messages might be old and forgotten, in which case I really want them to be cancelled.

A similar status message is displayed in Mail dialog windows without an option to cancel them. Menu: Window > Activity > "Sending x of x messages".

How do I delete/cancel the x unidentified messages?

Look for a mailbox labeled, Drafts. If you have one then look in there for these messages. Quitting Mail should stop all sending.
