Turns out I had to unpair and repair the remote and that did the trick.

recharge the remote using a lighting cable

pull the cable out of the appletv forcing it to turn off and then put it back in to turn it back on
My Apple TV is frozen on home screen after last update and holding reverse and home button doesn’t work to fix. Any ideas for level 2 troubleshooting?
