If a router support sharing an external hard drive, it may be possible that Time Machine can detect the drive as a potential backup destination.
It may be possible when you talked to Apple support that they provided you information related to third-party wireless routers that can support Time Machine backups over their wireless network to a network drive or dedicated NAS device.
Same answer that I provided on your other similar post. At this point, I am only aware that there are some potential Asus and Netgear routers that offer some sort of Time Machine support.
I was very specific in my question about Time Machine.
Their answer was that there was no issue that 3rd party routers CAN support Time Machine wireless back ups.
They kept reiterating the set up was only marginally different then setting up Time Machine on a Time Capsule.
No mention of a NAS or other extra, other then a back up media ( i.e. ext. Hard drives).
To me a NAS is a notable extra piece of equipment different then just a standard off the shelf external drive.
I find their answer to be bit disappointing.
Thank You
Just got off phone with Apple Support and they stated that the ability to use 3rd party routers for time machine was a common feature.
From your answer this is obviosly incorrect.
