Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Malware "your system is infected with (3) viruses!"

This popped up on Safari (Chrome, too). URL is cloudfront.net, (preceded by dacwkow4vc62c). screencap:

User uploaded file

Question: do I have to dig in to the system files and trash any preferences, etc., or is the merely a web page without any OS tentacles? Google search for dacwkow4vc62c together with cloudfront shows nothing; phone number has warnings, but could not find anything beyond that. Was in Google news, on USA Today page, scrolling, when this popped open and opened a new tab. In other words, is this more insidious than it appears or can I safely ignore it?

This is a scam!!! Please carefully read Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages. Please ignore the popup and never install any antivirus, cleaning or any other third party "maintenance" apps on your Mac.

As rkaufmann says, it's a scam and not a well-crafted one. To begin with Macs can't get "viruses", plus no one can know what's on your system, not even Apple. Ignore it.

If it persists Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart Safari holding the Shift key. If you still have problems Empty Caches (Safari menu > Preferences > Privacy > Remove all website data. (This will also remove history if you do not want to remove History open Safari Preferences > Advanced and check mark “Show Develop Menu” then choose “Empty Caches” from Develop Menu ).

Then go to Safari Preferences > Extensions and check there. If there is an extension delete it.
