Black screen for hours

I'm not sure what's going on but Apple store downloaded that says "Restart." After I press it, the screen goes black for hours with a cursor able to move around. I've tried typing in my password hoping that there's something going on behind the screen. Nothing. I can't do anything until I force the computer off by long-pressing the on-off button on the back of the iMac. It boots up without a problem and Apple Store has the same little one signaling to me to restart the same foolish process.

Help plz.

Hello ,

I in the past (with OSX updates mostly ) had the same or similiar issues , Safe Boot worked most of the time ,

> shutting down , even unplugging my iMac and disconnect ethernet from Airport 802.11ac dual band .

Once nothing worked , I called Apple Support and (?) with my permission Apple Support could view my screen at same time I could (I do not recall what that is "called " , anyways it worked , For now I am going to wait ( 5.2.2018 ) as once

my iMac was down for three days , luckily I had a iPad and iPhone to look up online , including non Apple sites - forums

about the three days of black screen ....

Best of Luck !
