Viewing/Moving Live Photos on Mac

I have a few live photos on my Mac (in Photos) that I'm trying to move into a desktop folder to later use in an iMovie. When I move the live photos from Photos to a folder, two files come up: a .HEIC and a .MOV. Neither of these will open (error message: "QuickTime Player can't open "[file name]".

I even did Image > Turn Off Live Photo on Photos and then tried moving, and I got the same two files. I just want these photos in jpg format. How can I do this??

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

How are you moving the items?

Select the Live Photo in Photos and use "File > Export > Export unmodified original".

  • If Photos can play the Live Photos, you are already running High Sierra on your Mac, and QuickTime Player should be able to play the exported .MOV file and Preview should be able to open the .HEIC still frame.
  • if Photos cannot play the Live Photo either, read this document on how to transfer the Live Photos from your iPhone to the Mac in a more compatible format: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support
