iOS 11.3.1: Screen blacks out - Ambient light sensor issue?)

iPhone 7 recently “upgraded” to iOS 11.3.1

I notice that if my finger or something opaque passes/hovers over what I am assuming to be the ambient light sensor to the right of the ear mic/speaker the screen will “black out” until my finger or object moves away from it.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a fix in the works?

I’ve tried rebooting several times with no change.

I never had this problem until upgrading to 11.3.1
