Unknown error occurred (-50)

Trying to install latest software update and cannot do so due to unknown error. Then tried to back up to iCloud and received error message "Unknown error occurred (-50). What to do now?

You don't really have a lot to go with, here: there's not a lot of information about these unspecified errors.


Check to see if you have enough storage space on your iPad. If you haven't got at least 10% more than you'll need to download and install the iOS update, then delete data from your iPad.


In general, you'll have to try to make a good backup of your iPad to your Mac or PC, before you can do some of the advanced techniques. I know this sounds like a chicken vs. egg problem, but here's what I'd try:


(1) power off then on your iPad. Then try backing up again.

(2) update all the software on your Mac or PC, then try backing up again.

(3) update your version of iTunes, then try backing up again.

(4) create a new user profile on your Mac or PC, then log into that, then try backing up again.


Once you get a good backup from iTunes, then try updating the iPad again. If it still doesn't work, consider wiping the iPad, and restoring from the backup you just made.
