MacBook Pro Touch - Screen Color Changes

Hi everyone,

So Im having an unusual issue on my 15" MBP with Touch Bar.

Every so often the screen will change its hue, it normally either goes warmer, or sometimes has a purple tinge.

When it happens its kind of noticeable. I either have to change my display profile, or restart the system to get it back to normal.

I've been doing a little testing, and it also seems to happen when I push processor with

yes > /dev/null

I will continue testing and see what I find, but i'm just wondering if anyone else is having similar issues.

I also experience video glitches, like flickers when watching online, or local videos.

I have found a solution to my problem by accident, while on battery power. My MacBook told me that Energy Saver was using Significant Energy.

Short version: While running on Battery Power, open up System Preferences and go into Energy Saver. Disable “Automatic graphics switching.”

Long explanation: As soon as I unchecked the “Automatic graphics switching” box the screen’s color stopped changing and the sudden freezing has also stopped. Problem solved. Out of curiosity I enabled Automatic graphics switching and it then reverted back to the color shift and freezing.

This is the part I don’t understand. With Automatic graphics switching disabled, I plugged in my Power Adapter and the screen’s color still didn’t change. I then checked the box to enable Automatic graphics switching and the screen’s color also didn’t change back. When I was on battery power and enabled Automatic graphics switching the colors would change, while on power adapter the colors do not change. I unplugged my power adapter and the colors did not change no matter if the “Automatic graphics switching” box is enabled or disabled.

So this leads me to think that it has something to do with the Energy Saver function. I still have the “Automatic graphics switching” enabled to see if the color shift and freezing will return, but as of right now I am no longer having these issues.

Hey Greg, I would be interested to know how you get on with going to the repair center. Ive had both the logic board and screen replaced but still have the same issue. So I'm also thinking it could also be a bug in High Sierra.

I calibrated my display a little cooler than the native white point, around 7000. When the pink flash happens the screen seems to actually go a little warmer. Its only when I drag the slider on the color temperature that it seems to normalize back to the cooler color I set. Even though this happen, the screen does seem to creep to the warmer side of things after some time.

I'm thinking that there may be some issue with the way the system reacts to ambient temperature, even it's switched off.

Maybe you could set a cooler temp on your screen and see if you notice something similar.
