Photos unable to upload 8000 of my pictures

I recently consolidated all my photos into a single Photos library on an external hard drive and tried to upload them to iCloud. I have over 40,000 photos (almost 2 GB of data). It took several days, but they finally uploaded to iCloud...all but 8000 of them. Photos put them in an album called "Unable to Upload." I've tried repairing the library and signing in and out of iCloud, both of which caused the library to re-upload (but thankfully much faster than the first time!), but those 8000 photos still haven't uploaded. I've read that I can export them out of Photos, delete them from Photos, and then re-import them and that should work for them to upload, but that will remove them all from the albums they're in and we're talking about 8000 photos I would have to re-sort into albums. Is there anything else I can try before resorting to that solution?

Exporting and reimporting is the only known fix, if Photos is treating the photos as incompatible with iCloud Photo Library.

To save your albums, I would export the photos for each album separately. Then can you reimport them directly back into the correct album, after you exported them and deleted them from the library.

I would create a new smart album with the rules

Matches All:

  • Photo is unable to upload
  • Album is <one of your albums>"

Select one after another of your albums and export the photos from this album, but only the photos that are unable upload from this album. After the photos have been exported, delete them from the library and empty the Recently Deleted album. Then import the photos back, and in the Import panel set the "import to..." to the album where you want to restore them to.

Then wait, if the photos will now upload and try the next album.

Thanks, this is really helpful! It's worked pretty well so far, but I've noticed there are still pictures in the "Unable to Upload" album (that Photos created, not the smart album I created) that should have been selected in my smart album but weren't. For instance, if my smart album was set to show pictures that are unable to upload and come from the album "March 2017," there would still be pictures left in the "Unable to Upload" album that fit that criteria and I'm not sure why. So I'll keep working on it and see what I can figure out.

I would reimport the remaining photos with "unable to upload" in a special album "to be sorted" after reimporting and deal with them manually later.

Photos put them in an album called "Unable to Upload."

To see the file format look at the filename extension of the image file in the Info panel for one of the photos.

What is it? Can you edit the photo? Can you export it to your Desktop with "File > Export > Export unmodified original"?

Is your external drive compatible with Photos as described here? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201517
