How can I delete a "Free Space" partition!?

Well, I am having a problem with my MacBook Pro. The issue began when I wanted to have bootcamp working on my mac, but it never worked. So then when I wanted to delete the partition I've messed up and got here. I have got a mysterious partition of 40GB that I can't delete. I can make bigger the partition but I can't shrink it. Basically all I want is to add to "Macintosh HD" that "Free Space" of 40GB. But when I try it always fails. I have left some pictures below so you can have a look. Maybe they will help you find the problem. (The error message is when I try to get "Free Space" merged with Macintosh HD)

First, you need to create a partition that is formatted properly. Free Space is just that - unformatted space. Second, you need to select the free space in order to work with it. When selected that segment will be blue while the rest of circle will turn white. Third, format the free space partition HFS+. Fourth, select the newly formatted volume than click on the Delete [-] button to remove it.

If you are unsuccessful with the above, then you need to Erase the entire drive and reformat from scratch. Be sure you have backed up your files.
