Mac OS 10.13.4 wake up screen glitch

I've been noticing this issue lately and Ive called apple support about it and we have tried clearing the nv ram and the cmos and it still will not go away. I was worried that it could have been a hardware issue but after doing some researching I think this may be a software issue with metal 2. every time I wake my MacBook Pro from sleep I get a brief 1 second flash this is what it looks like

I found a reddit post with a lot of people having the same issue and I hope that apple sees this and fixes it.

is anyone else having this issue on the latest version of high Sierra ? are there any fixes ?

I have the exact same issue and laptop. The screen glitches have been getting a little worse and I just got the below screen—my laptop had frozen, then I got this screen and had to manually restart. I chatted Apple Support after and they told me to reset the NVRAM. Hopefully this helps, but based on an earlier comment I'm skeptical.

Regarding the people who have "fuzzy" screens with still moving square-shaped cursors after waking from sleep. I'm encountering the same issue. I've got the feeling it's a driver bug related to Intel iGPUs. I'm fairly certain it's not a hardware failure because the exact same issue happens on some Windows laptops intermittently after updates and requires either a vendor approved patch or driver roll back to fix. It's only happened twice after many sleep cycles to me and I'd be more peeved if it cause loss of work. Apple's product line is smaller, but I'll give them a pass this time due to possible software/firmware complexity.

Here is a sample of the bug on a non-Mac machine with a Intel iGPU.

If I was more familiar with OS X I'd try to get to the bottom of it myself, but this is my first Mac.

Kernel buffer didn't have useful info. Neither did the logging GUI. If the error *is* registered by the system in any way I'm not sure where. Given the nature of it (driver/hardware interaction), it probably requires more advanced debugging tools.

Well... I have gone through apple phone support. Did a complete reset. Took it to apple and had them do a diagnostic, and complete reset (yesterday, found no issues). Today, it happened again. I have to completely shut it down to get it back up and running. Brand new Macbook Air (bought 12-28-18). Mojave. Green screen with a box that moves with the cursor... This shouldn't be happening to a brand new laptop!

Fingers crossed there may be an easy fix... it hasn't happened for a week after my IT guy at work made a recommendation. When I had the diagnostic done at the apple store, the only thing he noticed was that Chrome was open 6 times (which was the number of times it went green) when it went to sleep. with that the "apple diagnostician" recommended that I use "Chrome Canary" as it interfaces better with Macs. It then happened again about 24 hours later (using Chrome Canary). My IT guy at work said "always go with the low hanging fruit". He suggested that I go to the 3 dots to the right of the screen on Chrome, then to settings, then to advanced, then turned off "Use hardware acceleration when available". It's been a week, and no more green screen! I'll repost if it happens again.

Agreed. I was talking to my student today that has a macbook air (2018), and showed hr the photo of my screen issues after sleep. She says the exact same thing is happening to hers. She was one of the first to buy the new laptop. She says it happens about once or twice a week for the last 6 months.... How many others are out there that haven't said a thing???

lordnishant.l, your screens issue does not seem very in line with the specific screen issue we are talk of about. Yours may not be a software issue, as most of us are deducing ours is. If you can get your computer, namely graphics card, checked for free then you should definitely get that done. Most wierd artifacts on the screen in general (glitches, discoloring) are related to failing or broken graphics cards and they tend to get worse over time.

You are not saying anything that hasn't already been discussed, mdp1101.

We are not looking for "good luck" with our Macs; we are looking for a solution to a graphics issue that manifests regularly following specific software patterns. Please read even a page of comments on this thread before offering your suggestion that maybe we just dropped it.

I have had this same exact problem since I updated my old MacBook Pro 2012 model to Mojave in the fall of 2018. I tried the "fixes" suggested here in this thread, but nothing helped. The incremental updates to Mojave have not helped or fixed the problem. I just updated to Mojave 10.15.1 today and hope it helps. I hope that a new version of the OS comes out soon and fixes the problem. I hope when the new OS DOES come out, it won't make my old Macbook Pro obsolete! From everything I have read, I have to agree with everyone that it is a software/OS problem.

I struggle to be hopeful that this will change

I have trouble believing Apple will fix this issue as it had been several releases/updates of MacOS without any acknowledgement of the issue on their part (as far as I can tell). We are 10 pages of posts in, this thread is one of the most popular in it's category, and we're still hoping (guessing?) each update will help. Maybe you touch bar havers count to Apple but I'm sure owning a 2012 MacBook doesn't garner me any sympathy. I like that Metal 2, but c'mon...

I have this same exact issue. It always seems to be random and I’m not able to replicate it.

I’m running Mojave 10.14.5 on a MacBook Air early 2015. It didn’t seem to do it on 10.14.4.

Just to add to this, it will do this even when I’m using and external display. So it’s for sure not the screen or a loose connector because the miniDP is a different connection.
