Apple Hardware Test MacBook Air 2012 macOS High Sierra 10.13.4

I am trying to start Apple Hardware Test. Whenever I restart and hold the letter D my computer goes into internet recovery mode and asks me to connect to Wifi instead of selecting Apple Hardware Test.

Thanks for the response. According to one of the Apple support articles:

"Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test?

If the Mac was released...

  • after June 2013, use Apple Diagnostics, which is built into the Mac.
  • in 2012 or earlier and has OS X v10.8.4 or later, use Apple Hardware Test, which is built into the Mac.
  • in 2012 or earlier and has OS X v10.8.4 or earlier, use the system software disc or USB flash drive that came with the Mac.

To see which version of macOS you have, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. "

Looks like the support article isn't entirely correct. Apple Hardware Test is not built into my MacBook Air which is mid 2012. Guess I'll need the discs. Thanks again for responding.

That could be so, or your Mac is having some issue preventing the D key from starting Hardware Test.

If you're having a hardware problem know that AHT is not the most sensitive test. If it reports errors you can be pretty sure that's accurate. But just because it reports no errors doesn't mean there aren't any. Apple has much more comprehensive tests they can run. You can make an appointment at any Apple Store for a free diagnostic.
