Buying phone in UK to use in China

I was told by staff in Carphone warehouse that mobile phones bought in UK will not work in China, so if my Wife bought a phone here and put a Chinese sim card in, it would not work on any networks in China

I find this hard to believe, can anyone please let me know as we need to buy a phone soon.
