How to make sure iphone is not remotely managed while buying a used one.

A friend of mine bought a used iPhone like 6s months ago. I was there to help the purchase, we checked everything, did software reset etc. and everything was just fine. He has been using it all this time and had no problems whats so ever. Recently, he wanted to sell it to upgrade and so he did the reset again to wipe the data out, and now it is stuck on Remote Management screen. We contacted the seller, and he said that at the time of purchase resetting made it 100% sure that it was not any sort of remote management, on the other hand my friend is saying that he just used it all the time and was never done any such thing. So, who could be wrong here, the seller or my friend. And how do I make it sure to avoid such situation in future while buying an used iPhone. I was under the impression that software reset is the thing to make sure that phone is not iCloud locked but this remote management is something new to me. Please guide. Thanks

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.3.1

2nd, my actual question was, was it was a bad purchase or is it my friend who messed with it somehow and IF it was a bad purchase then how do I avoid it in future.

As mentioned in my OP, that we did software reset (Erase iPhone) before initial purchase.

If it was correctly restored to factory condition when purchased, and Remote management did not appear at that time, then it was added after that point. There's no way it was there. and it just did not show up.

If your friend used the iPhone to access his employers resources such as email or their network, the employer may have added a profile to the iPhone to manage it for access to its resources.

Remote management doesn't to just magically appear out of nowhere.

In any case the Management screen should say who is managing the device. It should say something like "Company Name" will automatically configure your iPhone

It would need to be taken in to whoever is managing it, to get the management removed.

Yes, it says a company name and in next screen asks for username / password.

At the time of purchase:
It was done like Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase all contents and Settings.

I am suspecting the same as your said, something has been messed up at my friends level and its not the seller fault.

All I am concerned at this very moment that resetting the iPhone like above is enough to ensure that no Remote Management is present. Right ?
