mac book pro boot problem

Hi,

i have the same problem as the one described here:

MacBook Pro, late 2011, OX10.12.4, boot problem

the only difference is that after the progress bar with apple logo i got a grey screen and after the mac book pro fans make a lot of noise, the mac book pro is over heating and it shutdown itself , sometimes it does not shut down and i had to do it myself, strangely windows is no more booting ,shutdown itself also, i have a triple boot on the same disk with linux installed and it still run nicely under linux for 3 weeks...

i also can no longer make a network install cmd -R cmd -option R it downloads the OS from apple and start making a lot of hyper ventilation with the fans ,seems to over heat, and shutdown securely...

i had an install boot disk from external hard disk and it does the same that with apple network recovery...

since 3 weeks i can not find any solution to boot again Mac OS X (or windows which is unable to solve errors) , any idea? (Linux still running well, so my Mac Book pro is now a linux Box !)

at the very begin the problem was solved by disabling some extensions, for a while the system started but used to freeze until it no more start, when i run the apple hardware test by network boot (this ones works) it passes all the test even in extended mode (check all the memory) i have tested the hard disk of the apple partition with linux badblocks command in read/write mode and it passes the test with no errors.

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally.
  7. Use Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

14. If none of the above helps then see How to Downgrade macOS High Sierra and macOS Reversion- How to Downgrade from High Sierra.

15. If you get here without success then make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

If you want to restore macOS to the computer, then you will need to do this:

Internet/Network Recovery of El Capitan or Later on a Clean Disk

If possible backup your files before proceeding.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the (Command-Option-Shift-R) keys until a globe appears.
  2. The Utility Menu will appear in from 5-20 minutes. Be patient.
  3. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  4. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (usually, the out-dented entry) from the side list.
  5. Click on the Erase tab in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  6. Set the partition scheme to GUID.
  7. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  8. Click on the Apply button, then click on the Done button when it activates.
  9. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  10. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note:

1. To install the version of OS X that was currently installed use Command-Option-R.

2. To install the original factory version when the computer was new use Command-Option-Shift-R.

thank you for your help, i did some steps from 1 to 12 with no success , the main problem is the fail of internet recovery,

i cannot even erase mac os x . I can do it from linux but i'm not sure to be able to reboot in linux (the last working OS) after having erased the mac os x and windows partitions, also i use MBR (master boot record) linux is on the 4th extended partition

also i can bring it back to apple before erasing mac os x

step 1 is ok i get the globe and progress bar complete in 5 to 20 minutes depending the apple server load

then the screen blank and the two fans are over turning , the back of the mac book pro over heat and it, not sure ... it shutdown or i had to shutdown it, i will do a last try letting it run at speed more than one hour, but i almost sure i will never get the disk utility...

my partition is no more GUID because i cannot triple boot in guid with REFIT due to old buggy EFI firmware, this same EFI prevent me to upgrade to high sierra last year, i still to sierra, not high.

I'm a bit scare to let it over heat with fans full speed because the main board has been replaced by apple two years ago,

there was a class action due to faulty main boards overheating and breaking the video, so mainboard has been replaced free of cost and this is my professionnal computer.

This night i have just checked the second partition windows one with badblocks , all is ok,mac os x ok also i can mount the disk under linux and see the root system and my home files under /Users, hardware seems ok.

test done.booting with Command-Option-Shift-R : after the globe and the system download from apple my mac book pro blank screen and run fans at high but not max speed and shutdown itself. All attempt of reinstalling fails at this point.

I have a genius bar at 10 km from my home,i will bring it when i get a rendez-vous.
