High Sierra + External Monitor

I've been running High Sierra (most recently 10.13.3) on my MacBook Air (late-2012 model) since it was released. I use my MacBook for work, so I set up an extended desktop (using a ViewSonic monitor) about six months ago without any problems. It was literally a plug-and-play set up--when I plugged it in, my MacBook immediately recognized the monitor, and I was able to arrange the desktops the way I wanted and get back to work.

I've been having issues with my startup drive, so last weekend I finally just erased it and started over. I had to start with OS X (what my MacBook shipped with) so I had to upgrade to El Capitan before I could upgrade to High Sierra, but was able to reinstall High Sierra (v. 10.13.4) without any problems. I chose not to restore my MacBook from the last back-up because I almost exclusively use the cloud and subscription services.

Now, I cannot get my MacBook to recognize my monitor (the same one) for the life of me.

I've contact Apple Support with no success (they had me reset several things that I cannot recall, but have seen discussed in other posts). I've tested the monitor with other devices and it works fine. I've tried connecting my MacBook to other monitors with no success. So, I'm confident the problem is with my MacBook, but I have no idea how to fix it. Can anyone help me get my extended desktop back??

Update: I have found a work around and I have my extended desktop back!

After combing through forums, I finally stumbled upon an article on the DisplayLink website. It's working so far, so I wanted to share.

Basically, I downloaded the DisplayLink driver v. 4.3 (it's technically still a beta), installed it, restarted my MacBook, granted it permissions in Security and Privacy, restarted my computer again, and voila! My extended desktop has returned! Here's the link to the download: http://www.displaylink.com/downloads/macos. Here's the link to the instructions: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1854724.

No, they occur since High Sierra's launch. My monitor is a Thunderbolt Display, and it's not worked since I upgraded.

Then your problem is not the same as the OP's as his workaround would never work.

The displaylink driver is for those docks out there that connect over USB-A and offer a display connection, such as HDMI, *on the dock*.

It is not used by a direct display connection.

The displaylink issue is very well known and started with 10.13.4.

I don't know why your display is not working for your since 10.13, but did you try:

- resetting the NVRAM and SMC

- starting in Safe Mode

- logging in to a different user account

- doing a clean install on a separate drive

You may also want to run Etrecheck and post its report, so we can have a look at possible software conflicts.

Hello again Luis.

My mac isn't recognizing my display again when I plug it in.

I've tried Resetting the NVRAM, the SMC and restarting in Safe Mode. I also logged in as a guest user.

I haven't done a clean install or tried the monitor with a different computer.

I did run a Etrecheck and will post it below. If you've got some time, it would be amazing if you could have a poke around it and see if there are any red flags.

Thanks again for your help.
