MacBook cannot connect my external hard disk

My MacBook Pro is sometimes able to connect and sometimes unable to connect to my external hard disk. Most of the times cannot. And now I am unable to connect it.

Can't connect Toshiba disk to MacBook Air I have just bought Macbook Air. It seems that my external disk cannot be connected . I bought the adaptor and downloaded NTFS. no matter what still no icon on desktop, nothing seems to work

Once more my MacBook Pro does not recognize external hard disk I had this problem a while ago and thought it was sorted but it's back.
