How to create midi loops

I haven't managed to find any help items on this, and what I've seen on the internet is out of date. I am imagining that I should be able to get a midi grid on screen in which I can enter in individual beats in the place where I want them, and also play them and then edit so they are snapped into exactly the right place. One reason why I am imagining this is that I've just watched a video showing it in a previous edition of Garageband!

Have I missed something, is it actually possible to find loops in different time signatures? I've tried changing the time signature indicator at the top but it doesn't work.

The drumming I want is quite subtle and minimal, to go with music that often has a hint of Caribbean or African lilting rhythms, so even if the time signature is four four, I want a dotted skippy sort of rhythm.

Your helpful comments most welcome!

You can enter midi loops in different ways.

  • Connect a midi keyboard and play the loop and record it. Or use the Mac's keyboard to play the virtual "Musical Typing" keyboard. Opem "Musical Typing" with ⌘K. Then use the Track Editor in score view or piano roll view to adjust the notes you recorded.
  • In the Track editor for a Midi track you can directly enter notes in score view or piano roll view as well.
  • You can drag midi files into a track, if you use a music editor to create a midi file.

The Piano Roll view has a grid, where you can click, where you want the note to appear and you can adjust the duration, also the articulation or expression, depending on the instrument. The articulation, attack, and similar are changed in the Midi Draw area.

For example: The Editor in Piano Roll view:

And in Score View:

User uploaded file

And the Midi Draw area with the controller for the velocity, expression, sustain and similar:

User uploaded file

One more thing, just in case your loop browser is nearly empty when you search for loops.

  • Did you already install the complete sound library from "GarageBand > Sound Library > Download all available sounds"?
  • And did you change the preferences to disable the filters for the loops? By default, GarageBand will only show the loops close to the current key and tempo of your current project. n the GarageBand Preferences disable the option "Loops > Keyword Browsing: Filter for more relevant results".

The current GarageBand version unfortunately does not come with many midi loops. Most of the midi loops in my GarageBand versions have been installed by the previous version o by the Jam packs. But once you create a midi region, that you like, you can save it to the Loop Browser and use it like any other loop. (File > Add region to Loop Library).
