How can I get my apps full screen?

So I have the iPhone X. the Facebook app has two black bars, one above and one below the app rather than going full screen. When I update Facebook it goes fullscreen for a day or so, then right back to the black bars.

My calculator also has this issue, however the calculator also will not display numbers at all. I can type anything I want to, and the numbers won’t show up.

None of my other apps have this issue.

Good morning Kyle32415!

Thanks for following up with this additional information. It helps. You mentioned that this issue carried over from your iPhone 6. Did you restore your iPhone X from a backup that was created on your iPhone 6? If so, then the issue may be in the backup's data.

Go ahead and try reinstalling the iOS software. Before you proceed, please back up your data using the steps below. This step does not remove any data from your device, but it's always a good idea to have a backup How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Once you've verified that your backup is current, follow the steps below to reinstall iOS on your iPhone. Keep in mind that this article was written for a different issue, but these steps will still be helpful.

  1. Connect your device to a computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, try to borrow one, or go to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
  2. While your device is connected, force it to restart.
    • On an iPhone X, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery-mode screen.
    • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery-mode screen.
    • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery-mode screen.
  3. Don't release the buttons when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.

  4. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

iTunes will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2 and 3.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen
Let us know how that works for you. Cheers!

Hey Kyle32415,

I hate to hear that you're having issues with FaceBook and Calculator not going fullscreen. I'll be happy to help out.

Have you tried restarting your iPhone? If not, try that now: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

You mentioned that updating fixed the issue for FaceBook temporarily. Have you tried completely uninstalling FaceBook and then installing it again? You can do the same for the Calculator app: How to delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Let us know how this works out for you. Cheers!

I have deleted and re-installed Facebook more than once. Every time I get the same result- full screen for a day maybe two, then right back to the black bars. This was also an issue on my last phone. I had an iPhone 6, now I have an iPhone X and it still displays the app as though it’s an iPhone 4. Deleting and re-installing did nothing.

As for the calculator, I have also deleted and re-installed several times. Each time, it still remains in the iPhone 4 format and will not display numbers. I have been unable to use the calculator app at all on my iPhone X because without being able to see the numbers it is useless. My iPhone 6 had the black bars issue with the calculator app as well.

I’m not sure if it’s an app problem or a phone problem but it did carry over from my iPhone 6. These are the only apps that seem to be affected.
