CarPlay for 2017 Honda CR-V

This is a comment. I have already contacted a Senior Advisor at Apple Support and he suggested to post a comment. Using CarPlay with my 2017 Honda CR-V has sometimes been a frustrating experience. I have to wait about 20-30 seconds after turning on the car before plugging in my iPhone 8 Plus. Even then, there are many times when CarPlay does not start up and I often have to unplug and replug in my phone multiple times. There have been a few times when CarPlay will not begin no matter how many retries I attempt. The only solution is to find a place where I can turn the car off and wait a few minutes before trying the whole process again. Also, if Carplay is working and I stop and turn off the car, I must unplug the iPhone and start the whole process again.

All of this is very intermittent but I would guess that it is a problem about 50% of the time. Even if I never had a connection issue, I would still find it annoying to have to wait 20-30 seconds after the car is turned on to plug in my iPhone.

My cousin has a Volvo with CarPlay and has had no issues and is able to freely plug in his iPhone X before staring the car and CarPlay works flawlessly. His wife's iPhone X works just as well in that car and they have even switched out phones on the fly with no issues.

From the threads and comments I have read, it appears Honda is one of the companies that has not very successfully implemented CarPlay. I would think that is an issue for both Honda and Apple to address.

Apple's solution worked for me to resolve the CarPlay disconnect issues on my 2017 Honda CR-V! It was a big pain because of the need to reset all settings on my phone, but it worked. I've copied and pasted the steps from the Apple support rep below; let me know if this works for the others of you that have posted here:

So my first recommendation (some of which I know you already tried, but the order and combination is also important) would be:

1 - Backup iPhone

2 - Disconnect or “Reset/Forget” the memory of your iPhone to the CarPlay Receiver from BOTH the receiver and the iPhone.

3 - “Reboot” the CarPlay (Press and Hold “Audio” until it asks if you wanna reboot)

4 - On iPhone go to “Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings”

(This will NOT erase any personal information, it will erase some customizations and will probably disable location services, forget all bluetooth and wifi connections, etc)

5 - IMPORTANT - Before trying to reconnect to CarPlay, try Renaming your iPhone. Go to “Settings>General>About>Name” and change it to anything else, just make it different then what it is now

6 - Now proceed to follow this link below to reconnect to CarPlay:

We took our 2017 CR-V to the local Honda dealership for a second time hoping for a better result with this issue, and this time a technician seemed to have an answer that has worked so far. He was familiar with the problem and said it has happened a lot with Honda vehicles that are around 4-5 months old. He did a Factory Data Reset and said in their experience the problem should not return. It only took about 5 minutes and so far has cleared up all the connectivity issues with our iPhones and CarPlay. We will see how long that holds true.

The procedure does not require a tech or a service call. It’s simply a matter of hitting the Home button, then going to Settings, then to System, and then arrowing up to Factory Data Reset. We had to do this outside the garage to get a strong enough data signal to allow the reset to complete. Once the procedure was done, it automatically found my phone when I plugged it in and all the settings were there. So far so good.

Ok, so now I have figured out my Honda CR-V CarPlay disconnect issue with more specificity. It turns out that it wasn’t the “reset all settings” that fixed it. Instead, it was that I also happened to simeltaneously have deleted the hondalink app from my phone; the hondalink app was causing the problem all along. When i reinstalled the hondalink app, the problems started all over again; I deleted it again and they went away. The hondalink app frankly does next to nothing anyway so for now I am fine without it but Honda really should fix this. Let me know if that helps for others.

I tried deleting HondaLink from my iPhone 8 and it did seem to help, but CarPlay still doesn‘t work flawlessly. As a last ditch effort I bought a new Apple brand lightning cable, even though I had tried other lightning cables we own. The problem is so intermittent I could never pin it on the cable. The new cable did clear up a problem of intermittent reconnects that sometimes happened continuously making the connection sound like a repeating machine gun. So far CarPlay works, but most of the time I have to plug in the phone twice. I wait for about 10-15 seconds after the car has started and then plug in my phone. Sometimes it’s good that first try, but often the Honda screen displays “Loading” and just spins without ever completing the load. I then unplug and replug the iPhone and CarPlay loads properly. At least it’s usable. I was at the Honda dealership for regular maintenance and talked to another service tech about it again. Like the tech I previously talked to, he also said they have lots of issues with CarPlay and they do the Factory Data Reset as their only solution, but they know that’s often temporary. He claims Honda is working on a fix. I almost wonder if the car’s USB port sometimes erroneously sends an overloaded signal that partially fries the lightning cable. It really seems like it is a physical connection problem either with the USB port or cable. Maybe it is just a software issue but I wonder if there is also a hardware component to the problem as well.

I have the same problem with my 2017 CR-V. You can see my tweets about this here if you want to echo them https://twitter.com/dsalpeter/status/998261749555122178?s=21. I’ve spoken to the Honda in car tech support team and while they are pretty evasive about it, they basically admit it is an issue since iOS 11 that they haven’t been able to solve. They seem to blame Apple, but given that there aren’t so many issues on other car models I imagine Apple may blame Honda. Either way, we were sold cars (still under warranty) based on CarPlay compatibility. If this doesn’t get fixed I’d be totally up for a class action suit against Honda to rectify this. I am going to try to reach out to Apple on this since Honda has been useless so far; please let me know if you make any progress and let’s stay in touch.

I’ve been speaking to Apple on this and they’ve been helpful; they’ve suggested that I try to “reset all settings” on my phone, change its name, and then try... I will be trying that this wknd. If that doesn’t work (and I suspect it won’t), they gave me iinstructions on how to collect and send them logs so they can look at what is happening. I will report back. Fwiw though, Honda has not been helpful so far and I think it would be good to put pressure on them and make clear that this is a widespread issue. If any of you want to add additional comments to my tweets around this to Honda customer service it would be appreciated... have a look at the various tweets I’ve published (https://twitter.com/dsalpeter/status/1004410704894550016?s=21 for example). Will report back shortly.

So after the Factory Data Reset of the Honda system as I described in a previous entry, CarPlay continues to work, however, there are still some issues. I still have to wait 10-15 seconds before plugging in the iPhone and now I usually have to plug it in twice! That’s right. I plug it in and the Honda screen says “Loading” but just continues spinning without finishing. I unplug and plug back in and the second time it connects properly and within just a few seconds. I wonder what iOS 12 will do to the Honda interface when that update comes out? Will it make things worse or have no effect? Will Honda finally get their act together on this issue by then?

So far it continues to work. However I still do have to wait at least 10-15 seconds or so before I plug in my iPhone or CarPlay does not work properly. One time I evidently plugged it in too quickly and the iPhone screen flashed wildly and repeatedly while the chime rang with it over and over. I unplugged the iPhone then plugged it right back in and all was fine. Even so, what in the world is going on with the weird interplay between the Honda operating system and Apple CarPlay? It continues to be very annoying.

Agreed. With Hondalink removed I have continued to be mostly ok. I still have to be careful about how soon I plug in the phone after starting the engine. Sometimes it takes two tries but always seems to work after that. I read where the redesigned 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid will support CarPlay. I might have to look at that if Honda doesn't get on the ball.
