Command R not working-this screen comes up...

I was following what I thought were correct instructions to wipe my drive and clear my MacBook early 2009 to resell. Something happened and now when I restart it goes to grey screen hay has the circle with a line...looking further into what I should do I am holding the command and R keys at startup which wouldn’t take me to recovery but now show this screen in repeat followed by the Apple logo and another saying something like your computer was restarted because...(can’t get a pic of that one). What is wrong...I did not get a disk with it and right now am not able to purchase one...any way to fix or do I need to take it to a store? Thank you I’m not the most computer savvy and not familiar with Mac.

The solid Apple is not in the Mac's ROM at cold-start. It is loaded and displayed from the first "blob" of software, loaded from a "magic place" on the drive, during the start-up process.

The screen above show that you are trying to get the recovery from MacOS Base system disk image, the incoming software to be installed.

Your older Mac does not have Internet Recovery.
