MacAir won’t play mp4 videos

I recently bought a Mac Air. I have some MP 4 videos that I can’t find. Free programme to play them. I downloaded VLC but it won’t play them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

MacBook Air, iOS 11.2.2

If VLC can't play them, they are possibly corrupt.

What happens when you open them with VLC? Can you then press command-I and shows what appears about the codecs?

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to play some .mp4 videos on your MacBook Air. If you haven't already, please try opening these files with the QuickTime app in the Applications folder, and if that doesn't help, follow the steps in this Apple resource on your situation.
