Magic Trackpad 2 is being treated as a mouse, causing many problems

Disclaimer, I am not the owner of either the Macbook nor the Magic Trackpad 2, I'm just an unpaid volunteer doing IT work for my boss, so I haven't tried safe-boots, or factory resets. If absolutely necessary, I'm sure we could try those, but for now I'll explain what I've done, and what I've learned.

So the computer is a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) on version 10.10.5 OSX. The Trackpad is Model A1535, a silver Magic Trackpad 2.

So my boss wanted to use the trackpad when he connects to a larger monitor, but noticed that it didn't scroll with two fingers. I thought it would be something small like it wasn't paired correctly, or possibly the settings were wrong. After searching through the various trackpad settings, and making sure they were correct, I explored other avenues. (Please note that the main trackpad that is part of the macbook works fine, and can scroll as normal.)

I started running tests on it to see what was working and what wasn't. It moves the mouse like it is supposed to, and clicks just fine, but it doesn't do touch tap (as in a non-mechanical click, like on a phone), and it didn't recognize multiple points of contact (i.e. a click with one finger and a drag with the other doesn't move the mouse, two fingers don't scroll, three fingers don't swipe between pages, etc.). After going through various forms and making sure there was no software installed that messes with mouse or trackpad settings, nothing improved.

It would show up in the paired bluetooth devices, and appeared to be working fine, but whenever I removed it from remembered devices and tried to resync it using the "setup bluetooth trackpad", it would show up, pair in the background, then return an error saying "The pairing attempt was unsuccessful" and prompted me to click continue to try again. If I did, it didn't show up to pair with again.

One time when pairing, I noticed the "mouse connected" semi-transparent popup show up during the failing syncing process. Based off of that I did a quick test in settings:

I increased and lowered trackpad sensitivity. The main trackpad (intalled on the macbook) adjusted accordingly, but the bluetooth one was unaffected.

I increased and lowered mouse sensitivity, and the reverse happened.

It appears that the blue trackpad is being treated as a wireless mouse, and I don't know what to do from here.

Any suggestions?

You need to upgrade OS X. With older versions of OS X, the Magic Trackpad 2 just acts as a wired mouse.
