Turn off iCloud drive without losing desktop

Hi all,

I just tried to turn off iCloud Drive Desktop & Documents and I get a warning that all my items will be deleted off my mac. Of course I do not want this to happen, I would like the items (4gb worth of stuff) on my desktop and folders to solely be stored on my mac - NOT on my iCloud storage

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't want my desktop or documents folders in icloud I don't want my desktop or documents folders in iCloud. Why, other then to hijack everything on my computer, won't it release these items when I try to delete them?. At this rate, Apple is trying to make its ecosphere a giant server for everyones items. You might as well call any new iMac's, Mini's, etc., dummy terminals.
