Why don't I qualify for High Sierra?

I saw a YouTube video that suggested my MacBook Pro 5,5 (2009) was capable of running High Sierra, but every time I try to download it, Apple says no.

Mac OS X (10.1.x), Safari , iCloud?

If I try to upgrade my Mackbook and it isn't compatible, will it tell me? I have a rebuilt Macbook Air, thought I was buying a Pro. Need to upgrade the OS from High Sierra. If I try to upgrade and it isn't compatible, will it tell me? I don't want to destroy my current OS.
