Migration Assistant cannot find ext drive

I have a clean iMac running El Capitan. The iMac is about 4 years old. I want to load data from a PC and I backed up the PC data on an external drive. Now when I USB the external drive on the iMac and run Migration Assistant, it just spins looking for the ext hard drive. The HD even shows on the monitor but it cannot seem to find it???

Any suggestions? There are 4 folders in the ext drive - what should I do? Thanks

Three questions:

What is the format of the External Hard Disk?
Is the External Hard Disk physically connected to the iMac and if so how is it connected (USB, Ethernet, etc...)?
Have you been in touch with Apple's complimentary AppleCare service, information on that is in Complimentary AppleCare Support

Format is Mac OS extended - journaled -----it is attached with a USB-------have not been in touch with AppleCare.

I transferred the backup I did on a different ext HD. I figured I would use my other ext HD which I had used on my Mac. But either drive does the same thing - it cannot seem to find it, i.e. keeps spinning even for ½ hour until I shut down Migration Assistant
