I use a Slingbox to stream video over the internet to my MacBook. It utilizes UPnP to set up the router--I cannot tell if I can use the new Airport Extreme with my Slingbox. The old Airport Extreme did not work, so I had to purchase a Router separate from the Airport, which is a bit kludgy, and I was hoping I could have a cleaner setup. Any ideas?

Actually have 3 iMacs!
Sling Media states on their site that the Slingbox requires a direct connection to the internet, which rules out the AirPort Express, but not the AirPort Extreme.
The base station is not more or less difficult to use than any other on the market. That's why they provide that documentation, just in case one does not know all that much about wireless networking in the first place.
Um, that did sound snotty and snide, but I don't care. I buy Macs precisely because I do not want to read documentation. It's usually poorly written by technically oriented individuals, and it rarely helps.
Well I guess that's your opinion. But it's kind of ignorant to assume that because you get a Mac, you should automatically know how to do everything on it, or the Mac should do everything for you.
That's funny. I have my Slingbox hooked up to the ethernet port in an Express, which is extending the signal from an Extreme Base Station. The Slingbox works like a charm on the LAN and away from home. So Sling Media may say that it needs a direct connection, but it ain't true.
I have my Slingbox working perfectly through the new Airport Extreme Router - but I did have to manually open the ports that uPNP auto-opened on my old router. It's really simple and takes all of 5 minutes.
Just click port forwarding on the advanced tap.
Enter the slingbox IP
Then type 5001 for UDP and TCP Public and Private.
This is what worked for me. My remote internet Slingbox viewing is working perfectly.
Apple does not use UPNP because its a poor protocol that is never implemented the same and just lucky if it works.
Nat-PMP not only does what unpn does but is a open protocol and also allows for you to broadcast your services to the internet (with some DNS configuration)
Yes, when it works. I could never get it to reliably and consistently work. It was always easier to configure the port forwarding/mapping on my router.
I'm hoping that IPv6 will eventually solve a lot of these issues that are inherent to NAT.
