Photos glitch when editing in photos app on macbook pro

I have a macbook pro 2016 model running the latest 10.13.4 OSX and I have had this problems for like 6 months now. Every time I edit photos in the photos app, the picture glitches and I get large pixelation or large areas replaced with parts of the same image - see screenshot. This only happens on my macbook, on my iMac I have no issues at all. I also do video editing on the macbook, but never run into any issues like this, so I don't know if it is a hardware issue. Any help would be appreciated.
