iTunes store error code -9836

Hi All,

I can't get into the iTunes store since I had a iTunes 'hang' last night. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the error code then. I am getting an error code now, however, and it's -9836. So that's it. Any help would be greatly appreciated from the community here as opposed to possible hours of 'due diligence'. I tried https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203174 which listed iTunes error codes but -9836 isn't listed.

Thanks in advance,

MM3

I don't think that this is Mac specific. The same issue is happening with 12.6.3.6 on Windows 10 PC's.

I think that Apple quietly discontinued iTunes store access to older versions of iTunes. I have two PC's with Windows 10 that were updated last weekend with the latest Windows update. I didn't have any issues accessing the iTunes store with iTunes 12.6.3.6 until yesterday. I updated one computer to the latest version of iTunes 12.7.5.9. The iTunes store access is back to normal. The big down side is the loss of managing Apps and Books (PDF's in my case) via iTunes.

I literally just upgraded my RAM in my 2011 MacBook pro last night/this morning so I could finally upgrade to El Capitan. All night I have been thinking that I did something wrong or broke my computer in the process, and have been trying to figure out why the App Store/iTunes won't work. I'm glad I found this thread; I feel far less crazy now....but oh, the sad irony of this timing.

Same here (France), old Mac from 2010, OS 10.8.5, Itunes 12.4.3.1

I encountered problems yesterday with various websites when I tried to connect to audio/video services (Skype, Hangouts, discord...). All my browsers are now obsolete. I decided to try to update to 10.9.x as various apps prerequisite 10.9 OS. That's how I found out that App Store and Itunes have that 9836 error. I'm now stuck as well and have exactly identical issues : Appstore not working (whereas working on my Ipad), Itunes only my music working. I left from PC Windows in 2010 to avoid that kind of **** and now Apple is doing the same. And we can't even fix anything because of their close system. What can we do ? :/

Thanks for fixing this Apple! I am not vey technical but I knew it had to happen. My take on things: Apple would lose MANY MANY customers by not allowing OLDER macs/operating systems to access certain pay services. Why would they disable iTunes, a service that makes them money? Why would they disable the App Store, a service that makes them money? Why would they disable Apple Music, a service that makes them money? They would try their best to keep these services alive on older apple products. There are a lot of 2012 MacBooks out there...There are a lot of 2011 MacBooks out there, and so on. There are a lot of 2012 imacs out there, and so on. There are a lot of 2006 imacs out there (what I am using), and so on.

On top of this Apple would lose many customers from buying future products....

Not trying to just blindly defend Apple, but Apple DOES service older MacBook Pro/Air by making their new OS compatible with older models.

As I mentioned in the other comment, my old MBA from 2011 works just fine with newer OS. You just need to make sure that Apple does support your old device.

For an OS support for older models, I think Apple's doing pretty good since the newest OS High Sierra can even be used on 2009 computers. If High Sierra can't be supported by your computer, you also have an option to just keep it at Capitan or whichever that fits your need.

Lastly, if you complain that your 2 GB MBP or MBA doesn't work with the new OS, I'm not sure what to say... 2 GB was already a bad idea back in 2010/2011. Now we are talking 2018, where 8GB is the minimum standard. You can't just complain that Apple stops servicing older devices because the 2GB device that is obviously far below the current standard isn't workable with a new OS.

Just a thought...
