iTunes store error code -9836

Hi All,

I can't get into the iTunes store since I had a iTunes 'hang' last night. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the error code then. I am getting an error code now, however, and it's -9836. So that's it. Any help would be greatly appreciated from the community here as opposed to possible hours of 'due diligence'. I tried https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203174 which listed iTunes error codes but -9836 isn't listed.

Thanks in advance,

MM3

I don't think that this is Mac specific. The same issue is happening with 12.6.3.6 on Windows 10 PC's.

I think that Apple quietly discontinued iTunes store access to older versions of iTunes. I have two PC's with Windows 10 that were updated last weekend with the latest Windows update. I didn't have any issues accessing the iTunes store with iTunes 12.6.3.6 until yesterday. I updated one computer to the latest version of iTunes 12.7.5.9. The iTunes store access is back to normal. The big down side is the loss of managing Apps and Books (PDF's in my case) via iTunes.

Ah...tt2 nice to hear from you. Thank you for your input. You certainly do have a history of coming up with some of the most unique yet (so often) right on the money ideas.

I missed your suggestion a couple times around, but when I finally found it, I tried - but I cannot sign out of what I cannot sign into. Nonetheless, flank attacks are certainly brilliant when they work. Thanks again!

For me, I have no choice. My MacBoom Pro is from 2012 so it can’t be updated as far as its operating system (processor isn’t fast enough). And since the operating system can’t update any more, I can’t update iTunes. So, I’m out of luck if Apple simply thinks that they’ll focus more on newer hardware/software and not worrying about older machines and their problems.

Thanks for raising this issue.

Today 30 May 18 I am experiencing the same problem.

Cannot sign in on iTunes Store on my MacBook running iTunes 12.2.2.25 and Mac OS X 10.7.5.

Error code is 9836 as being experienced by all those posting on this thread.

I have an older system yes and I don’t expect upgrades but it is very useful to me for streaming iTunes music and I want to keep it.

Hopefully Apple will take note and resolve this please.

Apple has to resolve this. If you go over all of their suggested steps to resolve a problem like this, they ask for one you to update your OS.

How? Update goes through App Store, and this won't connect.😝

For the people like me who cannot update due to software competabilty, or any other reason. Things should work like they did until yesterday when Apple changes something else. The simple " we don't support it anymore ", seems a bit bold.

Me too. Running Mountain Lion on a 2006 imac. Only happened today.

I suspect, with no proof whatsoever, that the older operating systems no longer meet security needs for ecommerce and we've been summarily dumped. Which is a dang shame. Makes paying $20 a month for Apple Music a bit redundant.

Amusingly, I could use a G3 iBook running Tiger to purchase music from the iTunes store this time last year...

I am having the same problem! This is horrible. NO ITUNES! NO APP STORE! 😠 THIS STARTED YESTERDAY 5/29/2018 - BTW I use both these services daily (and I am also a subscriber of Apple Music, and an icloud storage plan subscriber - Also own an Apple TV, 2 imacs, 1 Macbook, 2 ipads, 2 ipods + more) I am using a 2006 iMac (early 2006) running OSX LION 10.7.5 - I understand I am on an older system but there are people who are having this same problem on newer systems. Also, *this would make no sense for Apple to do this (stop these services) as I would think there are TONS of older mac's, imacs, and macbooks who's owner(s) pay for apps/music ect... not to mention all the newer macs this is affecting... Apple: What is Going ON?

Just read the latest posts in this thread. Checked was I am using: Mac OS X 10.7.4 and iTunes 12.2.2.25.

I have an iPod 160 GB and am very wary of updating/changing anything. Not even sure I could.

As someone pointed out, surely it is in Apple's interest that we all continue to be able to buy from the iTunes store...?

But will they bother trying to sort this out, given that we cannot update our systems...

Edit: (Late 2006) - also running iTunes Version 12.2.2.25

I use the App Store, iTunes, and Apple Music everyday.

* Questions for members?

What day and/or time did iTunes and the App Store STOP working right?

(It happened to me sometime near mid-day on Tuesday May 29th 2018)

What year is your computer and what OS?

I CANNOT access iTunes (For You, New, Radio, Connect iTunes Store, Apple music)

I CAN play my own library with iTunes, but that is it.

I CANNOT even log in. When I try to log in, I am getting the following error message:

"iTunes cannot connect to the iTunes Store. An unknown error occurred (-9836).

Make sure your network connection is active and try again".

* Also have AppleMusic and can not get anything from the cloud.....

(not sure if this is cloud based?)

Tuesday is stopped working right.

macbook pro retina (mid 2012 built), osx 10.8.5, itunes 12.4.3.1, appstore 1.2.2 (129.16)

I'm getting the same messages as you. Cannot access iTunes / Appstore, cannot Log in, Can play my own library.

It's pretty clear to me something has gone wrong. And if I didn't change a thing on my end, everything should work. Stopping support is way different then pulling the plug/preventing access.

Come on Apple… solve this asap.
