iTunes store error code -9836

Hi All,

I can't get into the iTunes store since I had a iTunes 'hang' last night. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the error code then. I am getting an error code now, however, and it's -9836. So that's it. Any help would be greatly appreciated from the community here as opposed to possible hours of 'due diligence'. I tried https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203174 which listed iTunes error codes but -9836 isn't listed.

Thanks in advance,

MM3

Greetings,

Thanks for posting this issue in the Apple Support communities. I think what's interesting to note about what I've reviewed in this thread is that these operating systems are all older operating systems.

Same here (France), old Mac from 2010, OS 10.8.5, Itunes 12.4.3.1

I encountered problems yesterday with various websites when I tried to connect to audio/video services (Skype, Hangouts, discord...). All my browsers are now obsolete. I decided to try to update to 10.9.x as various apps prerequisite 10.9 OS. That's how I found out that App Store and Itunes have that 9836 error. I'm now stuck as well and have exactly identical issues : Appstore not working (whereas working on my Ipad), Itunes only my music working. I left from PC Windows in 2010 to avoid that kind of **** and now Apple is doing the same. And we can't even fix anything because of their close system. What can we do ? :/

Hello again!

I'm pretty sure that this is not a local issue (i.e. one where the settings on your device matter) because everyone here has the same problem (iTunes and App Store deny access to OS-X 10.8 and older, and there might be other services which are blocked for which one needs to connect to security-sensitive servers such as appleID.apple.com).

Therefore I wouldn't recommend wasting time right now with resetting my device or other time- and nerve-consuming tasks until this issue has been addressed by Apple (I hope they will do so).

I have been trying to find out if there is anything that Windows Vista and XP have in common with OS-X 10.8 and older, since it is known (to me as of today) that Windows XP and Vista lost access to the iTunes Store May 25, 2018, and since it looks like OS-X 10.8 and older are getting the same treatment after that deadline...

Other than being outdated in the form of terminated support by Microsoft for Vista and XP, I could not come up with any technical similarities, but maybe the OS-X 10.8 and older with the Safari version 6.x.x. is simply not up to par anymore security-/encryption-wise in a similar way.

The problem for me is that, in the current state, I could not upgrade even if I wanted to. Nobody informed me of this although my device is registered with Apple. Nothing popped up on my desktop. There was, as far as I recall, no warning that OS-X 10.8 and older would be affected as well by the changes introduced on May 25, 2018 (which I am pretty sure are the reason for all this), or that I would not be able to upgrade after May 2018. I do however remember the months, or years, of warning of the terminated support for Windows XP.

Just around Xmas I updated my Dad's iPad 2 from iOS 4 or whatever was on there when I bought it for him, to iOS 9... the device is 7 years old! This is not possible in the current situation. That can't be right, and that is why I am hopeful that there will be a solution. Hopefully not USB sticks for everyone affected to boot from and forced upgrades to High Sierra which might be a little too much for my MBP?

Good luck 🙂

I'm running into this issue with iTunes on both Windows 7 and OS X 10.7.5. With my Mac, I'm stuck with iTunes 12.4, and on my PC I'm stuck on 12.6.3 because I want to maintain the ability to backup my older iOS devices and offload photos from those devices.

I've already tried completely deleting iTunes from my PC (using the 6-step uninstallation to completely clean out all the media libraries and settings), and reinstalling. Didn't work.

It ***** because I can no longer access my iTunes Match library from my work PC, and I pay for that service.

You're right.

Neither TLS 1.1 or 1.2 are supported in Safari on OS X in version of OS X (10.8.5) and Safari (6.0.5) only TLS 1.0 is supported.

So Appstore or iTunes cannot establish a secure connection. Thats why we all experience problems.

Am I glad Apple communicated this with it's users. Sarcasm mode off.

This really ***** big time. I don't have a good feeling about this at all.

I don't think that this is Mac specific. The same issue is happening with 12.6.3.6 on Windows 10 PC's.

I think that Apple quietly discontinued iTunes store access to older versions of iTunes. I have two PC's with Windows 10 that were updated last weekend with the latest Windows update. I didn't have any issues accessing the iTunes store with iTunes 12.6.3.6 until yesterday. I updated one computer to the latest version of iTunes 12.7.5.9. The iTunes store access is back to normal. The big down side is the loss of managing Apps and Books (PDF's in my case) via iTunes.

If your suffering from iTunes Error -9836
It is iTunes server issue. It means their system is overloaded. The first time this error accord.was back in 08. Today Apple released iOS 11.4 that bogged down their servers. With everyone wanting to update to the new software. Just sit tight. and try again later.hope this helps. Gjtech

I just got off the phone with Apple. I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and Itunes 12.4.3 1. Same issue here with error 9836. After a lovely conversation about the issue with an Apple rep named Tyler, He put me on the phone with his supervisor named Sean. This man could not have been ruder and less sympathetic if he tried. Long story short, he said that there is no fix for this, and that I am using an incredibly outdated OS and Itunes (his words). I told him that I can not access the app store either. His response was go to another machine and download an OS update and put it on a flash drive. Incredibly frustrating and disappointing interaction with Apple. When I politely asked why there wasn't some sort of notification of this, he said they(Apple) are under no obligation to do so. He said he was surprised my Apple Music even worked on 10.8.5 because it shouldn't. Sorry guys.....I think this is the end of the line.

Re TLS 1.0:
I found this interesting link:

TLS 1.0 gefährdet PCI-DSS-Compliance - maxcluster Blog

Wrong language, I know. But one could use Google Translate to catch the general idea.

The essence of it:

TLS 1.0 puts PCI-DSS Compliance at risk.

The council of the Payment Card Industry (PCI) has decided that the early SSL protocol TLS 1.0 is no longer sufficiently secure. Deadline is Jun 30, 2018. All web pages which are encrypted via TLS 1.0 after that date are no longer PCI-DSS compliant.

Aha.

A little further down is a table which shows what browsers support TLS 1.1 and/or TLS 1.2. Close to the bottom of the table it says:

Desktop Safari versions 6 and below for OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and below: Not compatible with TLS1.1 or higher encryption.

I get the sinking feeling that there will be no future of my MBP with both ML and access to iTunes or app store.

All kinds of online shops which offer payment by credit card will have to deactivate TLS 1.0 by that deadline. Another person here has hinted at this context already, and I assume that this is the reason for our problems.

That is all understandable but I wish someone would have told me before cutting me off so that I could have upgraded in time to an OS X which is compatible with TLS 1.1 or higher. There seems to have been a certain lack of communication from Apple on this matter.

That suggestion was made to me today as well, however in a very friendly way. Sorry you had to go through this.

The guy may have been rude but he is probably right, as in: this may be our only way out of being stuck with Mountain Lion or older. I think it is unlikely that they are going to roll back on their server security changes (if that is what's happening here).

On the other hand: 5-6 years lifetime as an OS (since the release of Mountain Lion in 2012) isn't all that long. They (Apple) should have communicated this WAY better and earlier to give the user enough time to take the appropriate measures.

Good night, and good luck!

That's all I'm saying.......some kind of notification would have been very helpful. Dropbox did it. Google Drive did it........but to just be blacked out like this, and to receive such a condescending response to my reaching out for some help. Not cool at all! Good night and good luck to you as well my friend!
