iTunes store error code -9836

Hi All,

I can't get into the iTunes store since I had a iTunes 'hang' last night. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the error code then. I am getting an error code now, however, and it's -9836. So that's it. Any help would be greatly appreciated from the community here as opposed to possible hours of 'due diligence'. I tried https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203174 which listed iTunes error codes but -9836 isn't listed.

Thanks in advance,

MM3

Greetings,

Thanks for posting this issue in the Apple Support communities. I think what's interesting to note about what I've reviewed in this thread is that these operating systems are all older operating systems.

I am having the same problem! This is horrible. NO ITUNES! NO APP STORE! 😠 THIS STARTED YESTERDAY 5/29/2018 - BTW I use both these services daily (and I am also a subscriber of Apple Music, and an icloud storage plan subscriber - Also own an Apple TV, 2 imacs, 1 Macbook, 2 ipads, 2 ipods + more) I am using a 2006 iMac (early 2006) running OSX LION 10.7.5 - I understand I am on an older system but there are people who are having this same problem on newer systems. Also, *this would make no sense for Apple to do this (stop these services) as I would think there are TONS of older mac's, imacs, and macbooks who's owner(s) pay for apps/music ect... not to mention all the newer macs this is affecting... Apple: What is Going ON?

Just read the latest posts in this thread. Checked was I am using: Mac OS X 10.7.4 and iTunes 12.2.2.25.

I have an iPod 160 GB and am very wary of updating/changing anything. Not even sure I could.

As someone pointed out, surely it is in Apple's interest that we all continue to be able to buy from the iTunes store...?

But will they bother trying to sort this out, given that we cannot update our systems...

The official announcement about iTunes Store changes said:

On May 25, 2018, Apple will introduce security changes that prevent Windows XP or Vista PCs and Apple TV (1st generation) from using the iTunes Store”

I can confirm that happened as I have a first gen Apple TV but there was no mention of anything else, so one hopes this is a glitch.

Edit: (Late 2006) - also running iTunes Version 12.2.2.25

I use the App Store, iTunes, and Apple Music everyday.

* Questions for members?

What day and/or time did iTunes and the App Store STOP working right?

(It happened to me sometime near mid-day on Tuesday May 29th 2018)

What year is your computer and what OS?

I CANNOT access iTunes (For You, New, Radio, Connect iTunes Store, Apple music)

I CAN play my own library with iTunes, but that is it.

I CANNOT even log in. When I try to log in, I am getting the following error message:

"iTunes cannot connect to the iTunes Store. An unknown error occurred (-9836).

Make sure your network connection is active and try again".

* Also have AppleMusic and can not get anything from the cloud.....

(not sure if this is cloud based?)

Tuesday is stopped working right.

macbook pro retina (mid 2012 built), osx 10.8.5, itunes 12.4.3.1, appstore 1.2.2 (129.16)

I'm getting the same messages as you. Cannot access iTunes / Appstore, cannot Log in, Can play my own library.

It's pretty clear to me something has gone wrong. And if I didn't change a thing on my end, everything should work. Stopping support is way different then pulling the plug/preventing access.

Come on Apple… solve this asap.

I literally just upgraded my RAM in my 2011 MacBook pro last night/this morning so I could finally upgrade to El Capitan. All night I have been thinking that I did something wrong or broke my computer in the process, and have been trying to figure out why the App Store/iTunes won't work. I'm glad I found this thread; I feel far less crazy now....but oh, the sad irony of this timing.

Hello -

same problem here (Germany).

"iTunes konnte keine Verbindung zum iTunes Store herstellen. Ein unbekannter Fehler ist aufgetreten (-9836). Überprüfen Sie, ob Ihre Netzwerkverbindung aktiv ist, und versuchen Sie es erneut."

I'm online, both WiFi and LAN work, I can use Safari etc., but when I try to access the iTunes Store or the App Store I get an error message which more or less says that the necessary internet connection could not be established.

App Store err msg: "Verbindung zum App Store nicht möglich - es ist eine Internetverbindung erforderlich."

My MBP ist a MD101D/A 2012 (bought in 2013) upgraded with 16GB RAM and a Samsung EVO 840 SSD 512GB instead of the original HDD.

OS-X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), iTunes 12.4.0.119.

Reason for my failure to upgrade the OS-X is that I had bought Parallels to run Windows 7 on the MBP for Mountain Lion, and that software would have not worked on the newer OSXs. Plus I am hesitant to upgrade to OSs which are much younger than the device it is supposed to run on; usually the device ends up being overwhelmed. But since I thought 5 years are enough to be behind I thought I should upgrade to whatever is the newest compatible OS in the App Store.

I called the Apple Technical Support and was met with extremely motivated and friendly service. We established that it does not have anything to do with my user profile or with the SSD, or with the internet access. So far we have not found a solution.

But if this started yesterday or only a few days ago maybe a solution is around the corner.

Not sure if this is part of the problem but since it might be I'll just post it:

iMessage on the MBP doesn't work anymore either because:

"Safari kann die Seite https://appleid.apple.com nicht öffnen, da Safari keine sichere Verbindung zum Server appleid.apple.com aufbauen kann."

(Safari cannot open the page "https://appleid.apple.com/" because it is unable to establish a secure connection to the server appleid.apple.com, or sth like that).

I had to re-enter my Appe ID & PW because I had changed it recently. I do recall that a few months ago there were complaints emanating from my MBP that the security for certain internet connections isn't sufficient any more in the Safari version that runs within my OS-X 10.8.5 (hope I remember correctly and am not talking nonsense). Maybe they upped the encryption for some of their servers and we with our lowly ancient encryption from a couple of years ago have to wait outside?

I could however still buy iPhones etc. in the apple store even after logging with the new password, I guess that should make me happy 😁.

On hold on the phone with Apple right now. Have been told that this is not a known issue, that they haven't had 20 cases opened so far. Also being told that there is probably no upgrade link available if I wanted that, because I'm running 10.8.5.

If you are having this problem, you need to make your voices heard and open cases with Apple.

Having said that, I'm not hopeful.

The problem is acknowlegded over here (Germany), says the Apple support person and they are trying to fix it. I hope that that is true and not our local version of being pacified... 😕

I am pretty sure it has to do with security/encryption on some of their servers. But how would they roll back on that?

If this doesn't get solved guess I'll have a fancy type writer with limited internet access. Two weeks ago my MBP would have sold for quite a bit of money but now?

😕
