Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

No. Apple has not officially acknowledged the issue (!). People using 8, 8+, X having the issue. People on iOS 12 beta having the issue. Some people discuss workarounds shutting off WiFi, Bluetooth or restoring but results are not lasting and probably not the answer. It’s crazy that a company that invented the iPod to listen to music has an issue so basic to the functioning of current devices yet does not acknowledge the problem nor has a fix been issued.

I found this forum early on because I wanted to see if I was the only other people were experiencing.

Did you lose all of your music? I have thousands of songs that I don’t want to download all over again. Also, I don’t think that will fix the skipping on audio books. Unfortunately, it’s not confined to my iTunes.

I used the link somebody posted in order to send a bug report to Apple Support. They aren’t going to read these threads. We need everybody who has the issue to report the bug to the proper people.

Since upgrading to 11.4.1 OS on my iPhone 6 a few days ago this has also happened to me in using the podcast app and Spotify app. Sound drops out then skips as if it’s an electronic echo and even makes a glitchy sound overtop. Seems this update is a real pain for older iPhones (of course it automatically upgrades if you plug in your phone at night). Not cool Apple!

I agree that many times when the issue occurs it seems to coincide with moving the phone around in some way. Whether at the gym or picking the phone up out of the cup holder in my car. Yesterday for the first time I replicated the issue on purpose once instantly by shaking my phone around while playing music in Spotify. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was somehow related to accelerometer.

It used to happen to me exactly the same in my iphone 8 just after release of ios 11.3 but I want to add that it only happened when using my jack adapter for the earplugs. If i used the headphone that comes with the phone it worked perfect. After release of ios 12 i hoped for a solution but nothing happened and i lost my headphones so it’s quite annoying to have to buy an extra headphone just because they did it wrong. I called yesterday and i let them know there are thousands of users around the world with the same problem and they knew about it and did nothing to solve it. I will reset my phone this weekend and let you know.

The problem started for me when I updated to 11.4 about 2-3 months ago. I updated to 11.4.1 thinking that might fix the issue, but no luck. I called Apple and was told I had to do a factory reset and that "should" resolve the issue. So I did that and it worked for about 2 weeks and then it started again. So I've been living with that for about a month. It's less often but it still happens. I've noticed it with headphones or on Bluetooth, but not with the phone's speaker (though admittedly I don't play through the speaker very often). Usually, the screen is off when it happens, but I've also seen it happen when I'm listening to music while in another app. I'm hesitant to update to 12.0.1 given the fact that it doesn't seem this problem has been addressed. I also see it as fruitless to bring it to a store since my phone is out of warranty. I find this incredibly frustrating and disappointed that this is Apple's new normal. Once upon a time they were a great company, but now I can't trust that iOS and Mac updates won't wreak havoc on my systems. I'm still on Sierra on my work computer because I'm now risk averse. I used to be able to update right away. Apple, please admit there is a problem and let us know you're working to resolve it. I rely on my phone for music playback not just for my enjoyment, but also for work. It ***** I can't rely on it any more.

I've have this issue too with iphone 6s. Just upgraded to a pair of B&W P5 wireless headphones and IOS12.1 and I get awful skipping - impossible to listen to music. Paired the headphones with my mac book, ipad - no problems at all. I've also tested with my wife's 6s (also on 12.1) and no problems. I've reset network settings and also done a full factory restore of the phone, tested before back-up re-installed and after back-up - still happens in both cases. I've also tested with a different pair of headphones and skill get the glitch/skipping. Really frustrating. Been talking to Apple - they've run some diagnostics and can see nothing wrong and speaking again tomorrow so they can pull some log files following me replicating the issue (which is pretty easy to do!). It's really taken the shine off the new headphone purchase. This seems to be an issue related just a single device in my case. What's also strange, is that it's far worse when I move the phone or when walking with it in my pocket - which leads me to think it's perhaps a motion thing and related to a hardware fault on the phone maybe?

I am experiencing a similar issue. Audio is dropping for about a second. For me it usually happens, when I put my iPhone 7 into the pocket of my trousers. Bluetooth headphones on head, phone overhead into left pocket.

I exchanged my iPhone on warranty as I thought it is a hardware thing. The second phone is doing exactly the same. Might this be related to some kind of pressure at the corners?
