Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

Congratulations! You are now and Apple expert. 😁

But seriously, I'd be interested to hear what they say. The issue has been going on since iOS 11.3 with a whole different thread as well as non Apple news, see links below:

I have that exact same problem with my 7 plus!

I’m currently working with a Senior Advisor on the problem. She and her colleagues haven’t heard of this problem, so it was very hard to explain, especially since for me it happens so sporadically.

Though my problem only happens while playing music downloaded onto my phone using the Apple Music player via the doggle-to-aux cable port in my car. Once I unplug and replug the jack to the phone, my music plays fine... but it’s quite annoying to do everyday 2-3 times in a driving session.

I took my phone into the apple store to make sure the phone and port aren’t broken... needless to say, my phone got a healthy bill of health and they were unable to help me at the store and turned me over the call center.

I’m currently trying a restore on my phone to see if my phone is corrupted before I apply a backup, so hopefully this works... if not then dang

This is the closest description on the whole forum to what mine is doing, through the podcast app, starting pods again, constantly enabling Siri, making pods play at 2x audio speed, skipping to the next pod... it’s almost as if it thinks I’m pressing my headphone toggle/controller but I’m not touching it. I’ve also figured out that it happens when my phones in my pocket and moving. So if I have my phone in my hand and shake it it happens (yes I have turned off all shake features on phone)

I had already had a phone convo with an Apple tech last week. All they did was tell me to sign out of iCloud restart my phone and sign back in, which didn’t do jack sh*t haha so tomorrow I’m going back to set my phone up as new and see if it continues, if it does I guess 11.4.1 is cursed for me so I’ll maks the move to iOS 12. I just don’t understand a) how it’s happened to only me out of my friends and family and b) my local Apple store hasn’t come across it as they literally get about 200 people through the door every day to help with various problems

Changed my background app refresh and it’s literally worse, can’t listen to 10 seconds of a podcast without it pausing, its so weird. When I take it out my pocket, unlock my phone and play it plays, as soon as I lock it and put it back in my pocket it pauses, when I walk it plays then pauses then plays as if the motion is what’s making it play/pause. Literally happens every 5-10 seconds!!!!

And I have ‘shake to undo’ OFF, but that wouldn’t be the issue anyway

I literally have no idea, Apple tested my lightning connector and it’s fine, that’s not the problem, it’s not my headphones and this is a brand new 1 day old handset

There has to be a bug in my IOS and when I’m restoring from my latest iCloud backup it just brings the bug with the backup straight back to a brand new handset

I’ve narrowed it down to happening when

- phone is on any % of charge

- doing a hard reset (vol up-down-hold power button) does absolutely nothing

- seems to only happen when I’m moving and phone is in pocket, when on CarPlay or on my car dock and I’m listening through headphones and phone is stationary it doesn’t happen, audio plays smoothly

- when phone is in pocket it seems like almost every step it happens (and yes nothing else is in my pockets to touch screen)

So could be something to do with motion?

Having this exact same issue, iOS 11.4.1, iPhone 7. First noticed it in Spotify, now it extends to the rest of my apps as well (I.e. calls or maps while using the device plugged into my auxiliary port in the car). Definitely a native device or software issue, though I didn’t notice it occurring until about 6 months or so ago.

I’m going to have my battery replaced soon as well, and I’ll repost if this resolved the issue; my phone has been overheating a lot lately, and given battery voltage issues Apple has been acknowledging (and subsequent throttling) I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that it would be the culprit here.

Well, I'm running 11.4.1 on an iPad Pro and so far Apple software engineering teams appear to have taken a leaf from Microsoft's software development manual - the one they seem to have discarded long since. Basic audio playback damaged almost beyond use - streaming, download to local storage, restart, forced restart, in fact short of a full wipe and re-install I've tried it all. Not holding out much hope for 12.x. Apple appear to have abandoned good software practice for useless fripperies and eye candy. Steve Jobs is spinning in his grave (probably at 33.333 RPM). Off topic (apologies) but on same theme of software reliability - they completely FUBAR'd their own keyboard too, which the iPad now frequently refuses to recognise as a usable device!
