Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

Thanks for posting this. I have the same exact problem as described. It happens to me more often than not using the music app, and yesterday occurred in conjunction with use of the Youtube app. Had to manually restart the apps to get them to function properly. This has been an issue for the last several updates and is overwhelmingly frustrating. Please get this fixed Apple!

I have a 6s, and have been experiencing this exact same issue since iOS 11 first came out. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, via apps including Audible, Overdrive, and Hoopla. I also use Apple’s Podcast app, Music app, and Amazon Music. Not only have I experienced this pause/stutter/skip/cutting in and out within ALL of these applications, but apparently, it’s also impacting my phone as well; my husband has noticed the same issues when on calls with me.

I took my phone in to an Apple Store (for a defective battery replacement) about a month ago. When I mentioned this issue to the staff member helping me, he said he’d “never heard anything about that,” but said he’d “make a note about it and pass it along.” I’m pretty sure he thought I was just another village idiot who didn’t know how to plug my headphones in properly (or something to that effect); I’d be willing to bet the cost of a new iPhone that my concerns were NEVER noted nor passed along to anyone.

After eagerly awaiting two more updates, I’m starting to feel like this issue is never going to be resolved. I’m

glad I downloaded the 11.4 update...now my battery drains super-fast, my apps freeze, and the stuttering audio is STILL a chronic issue. SMH.

I have the same on my 7plus been there since I upgraded to 11.3, affecting my business mainly as it's common place during calls, I've heard it's iphone 6 and 7 mainly affected. Bit of a choker when the phone alone is £44 a month! Sort yourselves out Apple at least by being honest you have a problem and setting a date for resolution. God knows how you customer feedback NPS is so high?

I play music on my iPad Pro in the mornings and always get the stuttering after awhile. This morning when it started stuttering I tried restarting iTunes and played the same song again and it was fine. So seems like there is some bug that occurs after iTunes has been playing for awhile. Pretty absurd that Apple hasn't fixed this. I never had this issue with all the iPods I used decades ago.

@welafever - you seem to be somehow personally offended by the fact people are experiencing a problem with their iPhone software?

I'm not sure anyone posting on this thread expects volunteers to help them with suggestions to reboot their device etc, I think what they DO expect is that Apple acknowledge and fix an apparently yet-to-be-identified software problem that was introduced in IOS 11 and continues to be a problem now with 11.4 (in my case - actually worse than it was under previous releases)

Just to clarify, the issue is not related to Spotify or Pandora or any other third-party app - the stuttering occurs with audio in the native Apple Music app and even on phone calls.

If someone here can confirm that a full wipe and restore actually resolves this audio stuttering problem for them on IOS 11.4 I'll happily follow this process - as frustrating and annoying as that is. It still doesn't explain the problem or why Apple haven't acknowledged it up until now.

Just adding my 2 cents. iPhone 7. iOS 11.4. Playback issues with podcasts, Spotify plus phone calls in car. Sound will skip and stutter on playback. Phone calls via bluetooth sound like slow motion , deep and added waa was echo. I notice mostly in car (but i do most of my playback in the car) with Belkin Apple approved adapter.

Have restarted phone and hard reset. I have not done restore or restore to factory settings. The last thing I want to do is all that work and end up with the same issue.

2 most troubling points.

1. Apple does not acknowledge this bug. Completely silent.

2. It is not occurring on 8, 8+, X

I am torn between buying a new phone because of this (exactly what they want?) or waiting out a Hail Mary software update with a fix.

I do love the iPhone, warts and all but this is bothersome on many levels.

No, they won't. They expect the "community" to solve a work-around or discover a fix. What really gets me is that they are monitoring this Thread very closely. We know this because replies disappear or get removed within a minute in some cases. The "Me Too" counter is not consistent, and anything negative will eliminated.

I think the majority of us who experience this problem, just want them to acknowledge the issue so we can have some sense of accountability from a company most of us have been with for decades.

What you may get, myself included... is a personalized email of concern... asking
"What problems are you experiencing?" How frustrating. They know what the problem is, even if they don't know the solution. They will go through their laminated list of things you need to do: (i.e. Reset, Full Reset, Full Restore) even though this thread has explained those are not solutions, just the appearance of help.

Just say it Apple.
You recognize the problem. We are working on it.
Not... Buy a new iPhone, that will solve it.
