Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

The silence from Apple is deafening.

What you obviously failed to acknowledge is all of those solutions failed. Practically all apps that use Audio are affected in one way or another. This problem does not affect the NEW 8s or Xs so please take your angst somewhere else. Those of us who have actually talked with Apple are aware they know what the problem is, but they will NOT publicly acknowledge it.

I have carried out all of the above described reloads on 3 occasions, after 11.3, 11.3.1 and recently 11.4 as I have stuttering audio everywhere but it's particularly annoying whilst making calls. I'm certainly not jumping on a thread bandwagon, simply a little relieved to see this is a known bug. Also if you read the thread you will learn that this does not affect iphone 8 and X do part of your response is not relevant. My easiest option is to upgrade and spend significantly more money than I have already, due to corrupt software and I refuse to do that! I expect the odd glitch here and the but these phones are the most expensive on the market and therefore should not be compromised for this period of time with a major software bug, I'm currently making calls off an old Moto G and it works!

I have the same problem while playing podcasts. There are 2 separate problems though. The 1st is that audio stuttering no matter what. I have tried restarting the phone, closing other apps, no luck. And the 2nd problem is the random skipping or pause this only happens when I am walking with the phone in my pocket, it appears to be that the screen turns on even though is on my jeans pocket and the music controls get triggered, that is why sometimes it pauses sometimes it skip to the next episode, sometimes it skips 3 or 4 episode in a row. It is a mess. I have been using the iPhone for podcasts since the iPhone 4 and this is the first time I have this problem. It is really annoying. Please apple return to the normal beha

Hoping on the +1 train as well.

iPhone 6S Plus, was on 11.3 until I stopped getting text notifications for one person in the messages app, even though they were not set on do not disturb, and I was getting normal notifications from everyone else... updated to 11.4 and now this?

I rely on my phone for streaming Spotify multiple times a day, and it's skipping like a ******* CD? I thought the whole point of moving to digital formats was to avoid this exact problem.... extremely disappointed.

Seriously Apple, get your $hit together. If this many people are having this exact issue over such a broad range of hardware, it's definitely a software issue.

*** Apple? People have been complaining about this since the 11.3 release...and with 11.4 it seems to be WORSE on my iPhone6.

Audio through your phone is a CORE FUNCTIONALITY and software for the Apple phone currently doesn't work. How does this happen? Where are the Apple support people to answer questions. There's HUNDREDS of people posting here indicating this is a persistent, widespread problem.

Every year it gets worse and worse. I never thought I'd say this...but this is my last iPhone. Never again.

It's because your "questions" were the same exact answer you would get for any generic issue from an Apple employee.

Yes, I have hard-reset my phone. Yes, I have completely wiped and restored my phone NOT from a backup. I am tired of hearing the same exact responses I would hear anywhere else. I appreciate your enthusiasm and want to help out, but these suggestions are all I hear, I want a real response.

Where are all the **** Apple "support" employees? There are at least ten separate threads on this same topic scattered throughout the discussions, and yet Apple hasn't responded to any of them. The fix to this problem better be in 11.4.1 or else I'll have to consider another OS.......

Jun 15, 2018 4:24 PM in response to Bobsteriffic

And I'm just gonna go ahead and disregard the other questions you asked. This is NOT a buffering/streaming issue. It happens throughout the OS no matter the app, and no matter the output device. It literally sounds like a CD skipping.

You're not experiencing any issues because you have the latest and greatest iPhone, of course it works perfectly.

I'm tired of Apple pushing OS updates that are unfinished/untested on older hardware. 11.3 worked fine for me up until a few weeks ago, until the OS literally felt like it was breaking. A full restore later, no difference. Updating to 11.4? Everything's fine now except this incredibly annoying bug.

And this isn't the first time this has happened to me, this has been a repeating pattern ever since 10.3.1. Update OS, works great up until a few weeks passed a new build being pushed, and things start to break until I update. I swear Apple purposely breaks older devices just to get people to upgrade.....

Just saw your other Q’s. Happens with headphones or when connected to my car with Bluetooth. I don’t play music through the built in speaker so I have no idea if it happens there.

If by music quality you mean the bit rate it was recorded with, my stuff is all over the place. Some songs were ripped from CD at I think 128b, some is downloaded from iTunes, some from Amazon. I don’t think I have anything that was ripped at max quality or lossless because it takes too much space.

In case you ask, in the Apple Music app, EQ is off, volume limit is off and sound check is off.

11.4.1? Do you have a beta of that?

Anyway, iPhone 7+ here, same problem. I feel like I didn't really notice it until 11.4, but maybe it happened before that and I chalked it up to a flakey adapter.

I normally listen via bluetooth, which never stutters BUT now drops out until I pause and resume the song (using Apple's music app). But whenever I listen via wired headphones OR in my car via USB (which I have done since before they got rid of the headphone jack) songs can start randomly stuttering. The same song seems to have the problem until I reboot the phone, then it plays ok.

This happened on Wednesday, in my car, rebooted and it was ok until this morning. I drove and listened to music in the car for about 8 hours in between issues.

The main problem seems to be audio via lightning, with a secondary being drop outs (which happens via both).

Yeah, slightly irritated. 😡
