Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

I think he means 11.4 rather than the beta 11.4.1, Its definitely got worse with 11.4 in respect to lightning adaptor usage, I have problems during calls as I like to use headphones and whilst running I plug the phone into a treadmill to play music from a radio app, both are problematic but calls seem worse, but maybe that's because I spend more time making calls? Anyway it's bugging me constantly checking if software updates have been released to hopefully rectify this nonsense, I never did that on my Samsungs....

yep, I noticed skipping in my Audible app and distortion and skipping in my music. I'm on iphone 6+ and use my music to escape the reality of cubicle life. I honestly thought it was my plug in ear buds messing up, and I needed to get the wireless ones. I finally had enough and googled it. I'm updated to 11.4 and it's just getting worse.

C'MON APPLE. FIX THE PROBLEM.

Same issue on my iPhone 6 after updating to 11.4 . Whenever I play a song on the music app and lock my phone, it pauses for a couple of seconds and then resumes with these jarring distorted echoing/popping noises. Totally ruins the music listening experience. Also happens during phone calls sometimes but not very frequently. Tried all the things that you did. Did not help. Apple really needs to look into this.

I mean, I contacted Apple Support about it numerous times and it always sounded like it was the first they were hearing of it. I would even tell them that there are lots of people with the same problem according to the forums...

REALLY hope this fixes itself soon. Apple seems to think it's a hardware problem I'm having and they want me to buy a new phone, but it seems odd that so many other people would be having the same issue.

So far it has not happened on my iPhoneX, but happens all the time on a year or two old iPad Pro with all downloaded music. NO WAY am I upgrading any iPad to get music to work. C'mon Apple! My music played just fine on an iPod. I believe the first iPod was released in 2001.....17 years ago. So here we are in 2018 having issues trying to play music on devices that make the iPod seem stone age. Not a hardware problem!

I have an iPhone 7 and this also started several months ago for me with iOS 11.3. Like everyone else, no update since has fixed it. I've restarted apps and fully restored the phone.

At this point I have had two live chats online and a fact-to-face conversation with a member of staff in an Apple store. Nobody will acknowledge that it is a recognised problem but they say it's bound to be addressed in the next update. It never is.

Being able to play music is as important a function as anything to me. My loyalty to Apple is being sorely tested for the first time ever.

I agree. I use my music to keep me sane while I sit in my cubicle 10+ hours a day. And I use Audible for the commutes. If this many people are having the exact same issue, which started at the exact same time, then it's a problem and needs to be acknowledged by Apple. I've been loyal to Apple since the first iPod came out. I don't need a new phone-I got the 6SPlus with the largest amount of memory you could get BECAUSE of the amount of music I have. It really ****** me off that they seem to be trying to force everybody to buy new phones.

I applied for the Beta testing, and it's been a while since I backed up my phone. I had to update my iTunes on my laptop and it says it only backs up a few things, but apparently no apps are backed up? Plus I worry about losing all my pdfs in iBooks. Consequently, I didn't back up my phone for fear of losing things, and didn't download the new ios to see if it worked. Any suggestions to saving all the apps and pdfs in iBooks in a backup to iTunes?

I do have items saved to the cloud, but I really don't want to lose any of the info on my phone. I wish Apple hadn't screwed that up.
