Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

I'm sorry, but that's only a viable solution if you want to use the bundled lightning port apple earbuds which are very average at best. I have a few hundred dollars invested in earbuds and over the ear headphones that have a 3.5mm line connection where the solution CANNOT be "buy newer (presumably wireless) headphones."

this smells of a previous effort by apple to restrict what lightning-to-aux adapters were compatible with newer iPhones - that broke the functionality of lots of third party adapters - except now they've inadvertently affected even their own OEM adapter

I've been having the same issue for around 4 months now. Operating 11.4.1, music skips using Apple Music, Amazon Music etc etc when using dongle. Music skips and distorts every few minutes.

I replaced the phone (from iPhone 7 to iPhone 7 plus)

I replaced the dongle

I replaced my earphones

STILL HAPPENS. Is it a software issue? How do you fix this, it's so f*ing annoying. Refuse to pay £159 for Apple Airpods.

I have this issue as well on my 6s. This is ridiculous that this has been going on for so long. According to every keynote since the iPod we have been told music is the soul of Apple. The fact that we have digital music, podcasts, audio-books, etc... skipping like a portable CD player is unacceptable. It is unacceptable for not only Apple but for anyone who touts high quality audio files that have worked fine since iPod Gen 1.

Please correct as soon as possible!

Thank you!

My iphone 7 has been having this issue since February. It skips and pauses in songs and audiobooks and it has started to do the same thing during phone calls within the past 2 months. It's gotten so bad that i can't hear people and they can't hear me when it starts acting up causing me to hang up and call some people back multiple times until it stops. I'm beyond words for the fact that this hasn't been fixed yet. I brought my phone in and was told there was nothing wrong with it and that the skipping and pausing and repeating phone calls must be my bad signal.... interesting.

I'm having the same exact issue with my iPhone 7. And it's gotten much worse since yesterday. I listen to music using different apps, and the issue happens with every single one of them. This includes Apple's music player (the one that comes with the iPhone), Amazon music, TuneIn Pro, etc. It's frustrating and annoying. My iPhone is also the main device I use to listen to music. Apple is really frustrating me and I've been thinking on switching to Samsung or something else.

It happens with the Apple earphones that came with my iPhone, with my Yamaha, with my pioneer, with a pair that are very cheap that I found in my drawer, when connected to my car using Bluetooth and usb cable, etc.

I’ve been using all these devices with my iPhone 7 for over two years now (and I have used some of them them with older/previous iPhones that i have owned too) and had no problems in the past. All started when the iOS 11.4 got installed.

Read lots of replies. Adding my observation to the mix. I get this behavior with audio books in “books” and with music in “music” and podcasts in “podcasts” and probably on phone calls. I have observed it through headphones and through the speakers of my iPhone 6s. iOS is whatever is current. Curious about the question whether a clean wipe would fix this. So many me toos I’m not convinced buying a new phone would do the trick. Apple really ought fix or advise on this.

So I am visually impaired and I use iPhone because it’s the most user friendly without need of assistance from a sighted person to set up my accessibility needs.

One of my primary sources of entertainment is podcasts. This issue makes it difficult to listen to them which is not good for relaxing.

I hope that Apple resolves this issue soon. I’ll be honest and not threaten to leave if they don’t acknowledge/fix it because that would be a lie coming from me. But what i will say is that I will start to feel disappointed in the product and be less likely to recommend it as emphatically to others as i have in the past.
