Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

This stuttering/skipping has been an issue on my iphone 6s for about 3 months. I've updated the latest software each time an update is available (currently 11.4.1) to no avail. It started with music, which I could deal with but then it started happening on calls. I was ok (albeit VERY irritated) but today I discovered it is what others hear when I am talking to them! I use my phone for my professional job, and it is becoming EXTREMELY problematic. Nothing like have the last 3 words of an important message from my VP get cut off as I hear him skipping/stuttering. Seriously, is there a fix for this or one in the works? Apple, HELP US.

Oh no problem!

However, I’m not sure if my problem was actually due to my music files possibly being bad(?) since I had such the experience trying to redownload them back onto my phone.

Many of the posts on here talk about podcasts/Spotify/pandora and whatnot having the issue. I don’t use any of those apps, so I don’t know necessarily if my fix will help those u.u

I have been experiencing this same issue and the best way I can describe it is that it starts while I’m playing music while the iPhone is still awake and sounds like a distorted CD scratch in which it jumps

Now it can sound different when I lock it because along with the jump it also jumps or sounds as if it totally stopping like a dragging sound where it sounds like a total ring.

Then there’s more how it acts when it’s asleep or awake in my pocket is more of a random mix of all these issues combined happening at the same time

It totally drives me crazy and the sad part was this was my iPhone that I just not even a month just finished paying it off and I was like Really I buy the phone thinking that I’m gonna score and see all this junk going on which is ridiculous

So please Apple can you Fix This

I have a Apple 7 128 with 11.4.1 Sortware

iPhone 7 plus doing the same thing.

Anyone remember when technology just worked? I'm starting to forget. Particularly with Apple as the ease of the Apple ecosystem working together is supposed to be the big draw for their overpaid hardware and copy cat services.

Now is seems for every "innovation" that no one asked for, they break 5 things that people use daily.

I read your reply with interest. I found this forum a while ago and I am one of the early posters. The issue with my phone. The issue with my iPhone 7, IOS 11.4.1 occurs when I’m using the hands-free in the car on the phone as well as when I am listening to any sort of music via Spotify, music via SiriusXM or ESPN podcast. It can happen two or three times in a few minutes or it may not happen for a day or so. I think what is upsetting so many people is a lack of acknowledgment on the part of Apple that this is an issue. There’ve been so many issues over the years – antennagate, bendgate etc. that it would seem unlikely that this problem has not come to the radar of Apple such that an acknowledgment would be made.

As a consumer and an Apple product user for many years, it is really annoying when a problem is supposed to be solved by all the routine recommendations like restoring etc. without the problem truly being acknowledged.

At one point I thought this was a ploy to get people to buy the newer phones but even people with 8’s and X’s are experiencing this issue.

Hi @Naroxas, I don’t normally post on these channels either. However, this issue has been persistent, nor is it the only example of upgrades introducing bugs where previously functionality was perfectly good. Furthermore, over time Apple has emphasized the multipurpose and concurrent capabilities of iPhones and iPads, particularly as a personal media centre. I don’t know about you, but there are some of us that spent a fair amount of time hunting out vinyl with no scratches or dust before playing on dampened platters, with perfect diamond styli. Who were prepared to debate the pros and cons of which sampling rate was best for CDs, who were prepared to fork out silly sums of money for acccurate CD players. There are also some of us who have been real time software developers, have written UNIX network device drivers, object oriented languages, artificial intelligence systems and logistics routing software, as well as systems capable of running multi-million pound businesses. So when I comment on poor programming and testing it comes from a background of software development, not some vague experience of having opened a word processing program once or twice in my life. Finally, I have been using Apple Macs since 1984 - yes it was a twin disk classic. I have have owned various iPods since the series 1, so when Apple break software that has been operating pretty much perfectly well for a significant number of years and do nothing obvious to acknowledge/patch/fix it over a couple releases I got peeved.

Thank you! We’re just the tip of the iceberg. And I don’t think it’s that Apple doesn’t care about its customers, but it’s maddening that they refuse to acknowledge it’s a problem. It’s also frustrating to hear users have tried every method of restart, reboot, reset to factory settings, iCloud backup, iTunes backup, etc etc and nothing works.

True. Given that Bluetooth audio is 1/2 quality, and newest iPhones have no headphone jack, I almost gave up. Got an SE instead and wanted to wait for them to drop lightning port since wireless charging is common now and there’s been no need to connect iPhone to a computer for at least a couple of years, I thought I’d wait until they figured it out.

But with current audio issues, I’m leaning towards android within 2 months now.

Come on Apple! Sort this out please!!! Ridiculous that I can’t listen to music without it stuttering. I have to close every other app and it improves for a few minutes, before returning to the stuttering/speeding up before crashing. Seems to me it’s a memory/RAM issue.

Running 11.4.1 - everything was fine before. I knew I shouldn’t have upgraded!!!!

Please fix this. If an Apple device can’t play tunes, what’s the point?
