Audio playback stuttering/skipping iOS11.4

I have an issue with my iPhone 7 where during audio playback, whether that be podcast, music or while on the phone, audio will drop out for approximately 1 second. After the dropout, the audio will stutter, much like a CD skipping. This is with the display off, waking the phone will change the issue to where the sound becomes very distorted and will repeat sections of what was just played.

I, and many others, have seen this issue since iOS 11.3. iOS 11.3.1 has not corrected it, nor has the recent release of iOS 11.4. From other people with the issue, closing the app in question, rebooting the phone, nor resetting the phone corrects the issue.

Please correct this as soon as possible as having dealt with it for two months is unacceptable.

Just a general observation; I'll update if something changes.

A few days ago I turned off "background App Refresh" in Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh. This has serious drawbacks, no doubt. But so far I have not had the problem when this feature is disabled. This dovetails with what I had figured it was since it started happening: background tasks locking up the CPU (or the sound subsystem) such that it can't continue to feed the output buffer fast enough, so the DSP repeats the last buffer (since it would just run in a continuous fast loop).

I reported the problem - with OS logs - at developer.apple.com in the bug reporter. There are instructions on how to generate the log, do it as soon as possible after the problem occurs (press both volume buttons + lock, you should feel phone vibrate; don't hold or the phone will reboot). After 10-20 minutes, sync the phone with your computer and a diagnostics file will be copied to your hard drive:

On a Mac it's here: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[Your_Device_Name]/sysdiagnose

On a PC it's here: C:\Users[Your_User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice[Your_Device_Name]\

Seems like a good thing to know in general for any iOS bug you come across.

[Edit: switched the labels for Mac and PC locations, but that was probably obvious, lol]

Yes I have powered off my phone. No I have not done a hard reset nor have I wiped the phone and started from scratch. For me, this issue happens only in Apple Music with local music files. I must be lucky because it does not happen when I play the same local music with the Amazon app or when I stream music from Amazon or use the Sirius XM app or any other music app. As I mentioned in my initial post, pausing/restarting the song or worse case, closing and reopening the app fixes it. Since this happens once out of every hundred or so songs and since the fix is pretty trivial, I’m not going to take a sledgehammer to my phone setup by doing a wipe and build from scratch.

I think they're referring to someone's post about the 11.4.1 beta being the fix to this exact problem. It looks like it was posted in this thread as I have an email to it, but it looks like it's since been removed.

"I did a post on this thread earlier about how I had this exact same problem (obviously). I did the beta 11.4.1 update and it completely stopped happening. So once they eventually roll out this update it should go away."

This started out sporadically on my iPhone 7 Plus running 11.4. Now during my 45min commute it will occur at least once during audio playback. Yesterday during bluetooth connected phone call I experienced audio slowdown and echo. An unplug-plug of my aux cord (Belkin 2 in 1) will correct the audio playback problem temporarily for me. The phone audio problem correct on its own after about 20 seconds. To be clear this is a new phone recently wiped and restored, not from a backup. Initially I thought the problem was with my Belkin cord and I had it replaced a few weeks ago. Prior to this I used an iPhone 7 for almost a year with no audio issues whatsoever. Apple I am a loyal customer, please fix this SOFTWARE issue.

Since I was forced to download 11.4 onto my iPhone 6, I've noticed on playing iTunes that the stuttering happens at particular places in particular songs. If I play the song over again, the same stuttering happens in the same places. It's not every song that stutters. Checking in my computer's iTunes, the song that stutters on my phone's iTunes plays normally in the library it was loaded from. Apple, you really do need to fix this. When it gets to the point that a 59 year old non-tecno-nerd calls you out, you are WAAAAAY behind the times. I hear there's this new phone called a Samsing or something like that?

Posting on this thread again to follow up... iPhone 6S Plus on 11.4.

I had this issue consistently for almost 2 weeks across all music apps, but it seems to have stopped on its own (knock on wood). Didn't update my phone, didn't do a restore, ****, I don't think I've even restarted it.

It's been over a week without any signs of skipping, and I've been using Spotify just as much as I would otherwise. I don't get what the deal is here? Obviously it's a bug and is still present in my phone, but it seems to have subsided for the time being... hopefully Apple can identify and lock this down in 11.4.1.

Or I meant backing up from iTunes (my bad) I had a restore from my iCloud the day before I did the restore from ITunes with my phone connected to my computer.

After the restore, because I didn’t want to lose any of my info/contacts/mail (I work for a hospital and my phone is connected to it) I selected to use the iCloud backup when prompted... then I noticed all the music I had downloaded onto my phone (roughly 25GB worth) I had to do a lot of clicking of the blue download cloud.

I then noticed that half my songs were not downloading, so it took me a grand while, but I searched for the specific songs on Apple Music, deleted them from my iTunes, and then redownloaded them onto my phone.

If Apple Music didn’t have the songs, then I went on iTunes and got some of the songs that way. If iTunes didn’t have the song, then I went onto my computer, pulled up my iTunes folder and manually moved the songs that weren’t redownloading, onto a new folder and then manually downloaded them back onto my iTunes again.

Was quite the process, but so far I’m glitch free and I have the iPhone 7plus

A short update - it happens when I start music playback after not using music playback after a long period of time. It happens almost always about 30 seconds into the 2nd song I play.

When it happens the phone completely freezes - nothing on the display, all buttons and the screen completely unresponsive. When the music returns 20-30 seconds later the phone is usable again.

Once the phone recovers I have to go in and kill music player and restart and I won't experience the issue again for the rest of the day of music playback.

It's happened with the phone at 95% charge or more

Things I’ve noticed. Last update no issues after nes headphones. 11.4.1. It came back with wireless. I have an SE. plug in my wired headphones, no issues. BT I my car, no issues UNLESS my beats wireless are turned on via BT. No issues via BT at the gym, but working in my yard it’s hit or miss. The further I get from the house, the less the distant I can be from my phone without issue. I have tried to minimize apps but no effect. IMO something is taking resources from BT or interfering somehow. Idk ***

I had this problem and did everything to try to resolve - reset my phone to factory settings, even had the phone replaced at the Apple store because it is still under my Applecare warranty. Then the same exact issue is happening with the new phone, which is less than 2 weeks old. It now occurs multiple times a day.

Super frustrating, but I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this!

I have talked with the Apple service. They told me the following: log out off iTunes and AppStore in the settings (you find it in the Apple ID panel on top), restart the iPhone and log in again. I didn’t expect much from it, but so far the problem hasn’t occurred again. However I lost all my Apple music downloads...

I hope this also fixes your problem!

Hello, Have a similar issue with my Iphone 7 along with a several others. Concerning the music, for the past few weeks, the phone keeps dropping calls only to switch to my music playlist, even though I wasn't listening to music prior. Then the song starts skipping, fading in and out. Then the device tires of that song before it ends and starts up on another only to repeat the debacle.

I've been having this issue for more than 6 months.

I've read several reports where they have done a complete wipe. Then either 1) restore from iCloud, or 2) reload and setup a new clean installation of IOS, and neither has worked.

I suggest reporting the issues to Apple Support and Apple Feedback, since it does not appear that anybody on the Apple staff reads this community self help blog.

I've wiped my phone and restored and that didn't fix the issue. Much like many others here, this issue appeared with IOS11. I've noticed that the act of locking my phone (even when sitting on a desk) results in the "glitching" of sound. And as with others this happens in the Apple music app.

I've noticed that putting the phone in aeroplane mode and / or low power mode tends to stop the glitching. My theory (for what it's work) I suspect the CPU is busy doing some background task which uses network. Putting the phone in aeroplane mode prevents this task from working and it 'pauses' until later.
