Outgoing smtp mail server port confusion & results

Hi folks

I’ve started getting Cannot Send Mail, a copy has been placed in your Outbox failures with my AOL account. It says the recipient name (my aol email address) was rejected by the server. I deleted the AOL email account and recreated it using Add Account to fix the problem.

Apple says the Outgoing server smtp.aol.com should be port 587 but when the account gets created, port 465 is automatically filled in.

Observations: When I test Send, mail sent from that AOL account to my gmail account is received OK which leads me to believe the auto filled Outgoing mail server port of 465 does work even though it’s not the 587 Apple says to use. However, if I send an email to myself (from AOL to AOL), I get the Cannot Send Mail failure. The email attempt gets placed in my Outbox and never goes because it says the recipient mail address was rejected but the server. Sending mail to my AOL account from my gmail account is received OK indicating the autofilled Incoming port setting of 993 and that same recipient mail address work fine.

Hmmmm I guess I need another perspective on what to try next.
