Iphone contacts phone numbers just numbers?

I was able to re-insert the correct number, and nothing else would change. That person would then appear in messages if we recently conversed. I found an okder thread that said to turn icloud off, delete contacts from phone and then recycle ohone, and turn on icloud contacts. It appears to have worked but it is very frustrating. My iPhone X has been doing odd things like this for about a week.

I don’t know why it happened, but try making a slight edit to one of the contacts and see if the app shows contact names again. You can also try toggling the setting for Short Name off and on in the Contacts settings and see if that fixes it.
