iOS 11.4 battery drain

My iPhone 6 was working perfectly fine until I updated to iOS 11.4 and ever since I did that my battery is draining rapidly even without me using it at all. I used to go a full day without charging it now it may last half a day. I am just wondering if something got turned on with this new update that I have to turn off to save battery life. It is just weird I have not done anything other than update the iOS and now this happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same issue.

When I look at my battery performance, it shows that the personal hotspot on my phone is being used, though I have never turned it on. I have to keep charging my iPhone every 2-3 hours now.

There two main issues being discussed at the moment as a result of iOS 11.4 and 11.4.1 updates, this one about excessive battery consumption and this IOS 11.4.1 and wifi problem with respect to WiFi disconnects.

It appears the WiFi issue has now attracted the attention of Apple because not only have bug reports been filed by various members but Tech Support are now contacting members of this forum (from the above discussion group) personally to talk about and gain further info. This has been ongoing now for about a week and someone has posted Apple are close to a fix after gaining some feedback during one of those exchanges.

I would advise all that are experiencing the battery issue start a similar process, namely completing bug reports and contacting Apple direct, do not accept it’s down to a bad battery and push the issue until they start to actively seek further info as they have done for the other problem.

Apple Tech do in fact read these discussions so it’s also important when posting to put as much info regarding what's been tried and if any improvement (or not) was noted while trying to keep the frustration element under control if possible.

In this case it is a major bug. I've also played with different WIFI settings, also followed the advices in lots of discussions. At the end of the day even turning Wifi completely off didn't help to get back the pre-ios 11.4 situation. Depending on the setting the iPhone needed after 3 - 5 hour the Power Plug. It's dramatic and it renders the phone useless (in my case a iPhone 6S Plus).

What really helps:

  • Downgrade iOS to last version before iOS 11.4
  • Upgrade to iOS 12 Beta, if you are willing to accepts the risks of beta software and if you have access to the beta

Both options showed me better results. However, the first option is IMHO the best option for 99,9% of users. But be aware that there might be a data loss, if you have no recent backup of your data.

I'm relatively shure that Apple has a great interest in finding and solving this issue. Otherwise they risk - beside damage of the brand image - also to get sued by angry customers. So I believe we will very soon get an update which fixes the issue.

If you have not yet upgraded to 11.4: Don't do it now! Wait until Apple has fixed the problem.

If you have no option to revert, to use the beta or to avoid the update and you are already a victim of the bug, I really don't see any chance to reliably work around it. My observation is, that the best you can do is to turn off any iCloud sync, reduce the number of mails stored on the device and switch to manual refresh and to avoid Wifi and Bluetooth connections - means: You have little more functionality left than available on a 1st gen iPhone... Okay... A better screen...

😟 That's not cool, Apple...

iOS 11.4 causing massive draining on my iPhone 6, and I mean dropping 1% every 20 seconds at times. Battery health is ok and I'm connecting to 2.4GHz WiFi. But even in LTE it does the same anyways.

I checked battery usage in settings and Mail app is hogging 70% of both time and CPU. So... potential culprit there.

I reset the infamous network settings to no avail, draining madness continues.

However, when I

  1. Switch on Airplane mode & turn off WiFi and Bluetooth (i.e. "isolate" the phone) > rapid draining stops (a bit obvious, but at least to have a starting point)
  2. Turn WiFi and Bluetooth back on > still normal consumption
  3. Switch off Airplane mode (i.e. back to full connectivity) > back to rapid draining - after a little while

So, could this be a cellular issue? I know having cellular on consumes more battery than having if off, sure, but the news here is that in my case wifi doesn't seem to be the issue.

I made the following changes

  • turned off WiFi
  • turned off Bluetooth
  • went through "Settings > Notifications" and turned off Notifications form any App that I did not need it from.

Battery usage has gone back to "almost" iOS11.3 level.

Idle time battery is the same as iOS 11.3.

Active time still drains extremely fast. I, too, can watch the battery usage do down as I use any interactive application.

Reasons for iOS 11.4 could ruin your battery life:

The higher version makes your phone to work in the advanced configuration. Maybe this is the reason to drain your battery when not in use. Anyway this one of the disadvantages of this iOS version.

Let go to the fix.

FIX 1: Problem with Wi-Fi

The problem may be with your Wi-Fi after upgrading to 11.4 some major changes happen on it. To rectify this by Switching from a 5GHz network to a 2.4GHz network. Otherwise, disable Wi-Fi.

FIX 2: Battery drain recommendations in settings

IPhone iOS will suggest some system changes to save your battery life. Some of your iPhone recommendations will appear in our tips below, but you can always check the settings for your iPhone's battery life. Let see what changes your iPhone recommends.

Steps to disable location Service:

  1. Go to Settings app.

  2. Select Battery Option, under that it will offer changing settings which will improve battery life.

  3. You can check every suggestion and choose appropriate check which needs exactly.

  4. For more details...

I need to post another answer. The battery performance is even worse than I initially suspected. Now after 3 hours of doing nothing in the morning (3 calls, 2 messages, no music, no Maps) it dropped from 100% to 20%.

My battery health is very decent, i.e. 89% so the problem is definitely related to iOS upgrade.

Apple, please fix it!

I am having the exact same problem on my iPhone 6S. Last 3 nights in a row, I went to sleep with iphone at 70-80% charged and by morning (in 7-8 hours) my phone was dead, down to 0% battery. I did contact Apple support, they ran diagnostics and said all looks good. My battery health is at 100%, I have recently upgraded the battery.

This started exactly after the iOS upgrade to 11.4, it's already been 4-5 days and issue still continues. Keeping location services off can't be a solution to this.

I have/had this problem too. I tried all possible solutions to this issue but to no avail. Then I figured I’d try something else and that was to reinstall iOS from the 11.4 IPSW file with iTunes.

As of now I have done this for one of our iPhone’s that has the drainage problem. So far battery seems back to normal approx 5% per hour w/ moderate use.

Search DuckDuckGo: iOS 11.4 IPSW.

OSXDAILY has links to the IPSW files for all devices plus a write up on how to install.

Hope this helps you too.

I have that same experience on iPhone 6S plus. When WIFI is ON, battery is draining 32% per 4,5 hours. When WIFI is OFF, battery is draining 1% per 4,5 hours.

Before upgrade to iOS 11.4 iPhone working 3 days on battery. Now I must rechable 2 times per day.

It is crazy! Apple please fix it ASAP. Iphone is now unusable.

Or allow easy downgrade (from iPhone without PC or mac) to version iOS 11.3.1

Jun 6, 2018 4:48 AM in response to pavel53

Hi Pavel, you can downgrade to 11.3.1 by downloading the IPSW file for your model (searching on osxdaily dot com for IPSW 11.3.1 will give you the links to the respective file on Apple.com.)

Connect your phone to iTunes after the file has downloaded.

Select the iPhone icon in iTunes.

Select update phone whilst at the same time holding the option/alt key. This will open a window where you can navigate to your downloaded IPSW. Select open and follow the steps on screen. let the process finish without disconnecting your phone.

After reboot your iPhone will be restored to 11.3.1

Jun 6, 2018 5:22 AM in response to Zide99

Had the same problems on my iPhone 6S with battery health at 97%. Battery would drop before my eyes. Finally reverted to 11.3.1.

I don't use location services very much - most system ones are off and apps are set to only 'while using'.

I did notice battery usage by mail was much higher than normal.

Is it possible that exchange email with push is a culprit? Perhaps in conjunction with WIFI?

I do have two email accounts - one Exchange, one Outlook.com that are set up with push.
