Of course you would not agree to the update if you were forewarned. That is the reason why. How else are they going to get you to spend more money ?
I believe this version was in Beta for more than a year. I have a feeling they pushed it out before it was ready. There is no such thing as high performance update. Only thing I see is the **** thing rebooting every minute or two. I don't see any speed improvements over earlier state. BTW I have 100 mbps connection so that is not a constraint. It was running fine until this update. So was the battery.
My reason for buying the iPad was Facetime only, for chatting with my granddaughters on their iPods who live half a world away. Now that they have grown up and got their iPhones, I am trying to talk my daughter into installing Google Duo on their phones. Incidentally it is a far better application even under really slow internet connectivity. Once they do I will just dump my iPad. Most certainly not buying another Apple product.
Okay, I was surprised posiively when I chatted with Apple start of the week.
Today I had my appointment at the Genius bar. Surprisingly I had to repeat all the story even the chat content was saved. Finaly they did the diagnostics again and this time they wanted money for battery replacement or better to buy a new one. In my chat protocal it was confired to be free. Also the guy mentioned all the battery drain issues with 11.4.0 were fixed in 11.4.1 release.
End of story. I am not going to deal with stupid apple staff again.
It is so typical of them. I did not have any problem with my iPad until the latest update to 11.4.1. I am not sure if it was updated from 11.4.0 or an earlier version. The worst part of such experience is they can lie to your face even when they know the problem is not with the product or the battery but the OS. Unlike the Android system or any other computing platform you can't downgrade the OS. I can't understand the logic of it. May be they think they are God's gift to the users.
They don't care about people like us because they know they have lost us for ever. I can accept slowing down of the device when there is much greater demand on resources by additional features by way of processing power or memory but just killing of the device is a big no-no. I have Samsung and Xiaomi phones varying in age from 10 to 1 year old. Even on the 8 and10 year old phones the ORIGINAL battery still lasts for more than 24 hours on a single charge.
I really think the problem with Apple is:
1. The refuse to admit there is a problem
2. They are afraid that if they admit there is a problem it will affect their stock
3. They are not communicating to their support people about the reported problems or how to try to handle the issue
4. They probably believe it is a small percentage of iPhones having the issue
5. They are focused on 12 to fix MANY problems
6. They really don't care.
Just wait until they come out with the iCar (I assume that will be what they call it) planned in a few years
Then just wait on the side of the road until the next SW release comes out 🙂
You are right on all counts.
(1) True
(2) More afraid to lose their job
(3) Support people are only trained in 3 things. Offer a replacement at like new cost. or demand exorbitant amount for changing the battery or talk you into buying a new one.
(4) More like very small percentage of affected people who can get to one of their "non-service centers".
(5) 12 is simply not happening for the affected devices. The device has to remain on long enough for it to be updated, In my case it keeps rebooting every couple of minutes. Even when connected to the charger.
(6) Right on the money.
If and As and When they come out with an iCar it will have following restrictions & limitations & features.
1. They can be charged only if the power comes from a power station owned or licensed by Apple.
2. If you have ANY device on you running any OS other than Apple then either the car will keep announcing for the device to be switched off or will simply run the battery down and leave you stranded.
3. Only music that will play must be from their own store.
4. They will expect you to have the car towed to a service center where they will ask you for your right arm and left leg to charge and update the OS to the next version.
I’ve had this battery drain issue on my iPad ever since updating to version 11.4 and 11.4.1 did NOT fix the issue. The problem gets worse. When the battery gets just below 30%, the iPad now completely shuts itself down and I have to plug it in to AC to recharge. No warning of low battery or nothing, iPad shuts itself off and becomes useless unless plugged into AC.
APPLE, can you listen to your customers, there’s a problem with that iOS version, please allow some way for owners of their devices to revert back to an older iOS if they would like to do this. Consumer complaints should dictate how you handle certain problems, ARE YOU NOT LISTENING OR DO YOU JUST DON’T CARE???
I have a different problem.
It just keeps rebooting every 2 minutes. This is regardless of the battery charge level at point in time, It could be anywhere from 1% to 100 %.
When I need to charge it, I have to connect the charger and place it very carefully to ensure that the charging lightning symbol is visible. At that point I have to forcibly power it off WITHOUT disturbing the charger cable. If I don't do exactly that it simply does not charge.
I am a 72 year old person living alone. Why do I even need face ID or lock screen? I just need it to run smoothly so I can video chat with FaceTime with my 10 and 12 year old granddaughters living half way across the globe.
I will try next week. Only thing that might work is reverting to the previos OS version. Umfortunately that may not be possible as the **** thing keeps rebooting every couple of minutes.
But they are the same jokers who offered to exchange my wife's iPad with the same model for 20% more than I can buy a newer version in the open market. I am old but not senile, not yet.
It is an iPad Mini II. But why should it matter? There is a methodology for predicting failures. It is not like they have 1000 different models of products that they would be hard mressed to keep track of. I know a
that all the aircraft manufacturing companies have planes flying around the globe that have logged several thousand more hours than any plane in commercial service. It is not even like say M$ OS where you can literally have a jillion combinations and permutations of hardware by independent manufacturer. It is their own captive hardware. One can bet that they have no more than say 50 to 60 different models/combination in the market.
Actually I miss those old time PDAs which held the OS on a non volatile mask rom which could be re-installed to revert back to factory default state. I can do something similar even with the current tablets with flashable roms. But that is on Android devices. I have even managed to unbrick a rooted Nexus 7 with USB cable and CLI on my desktop PC. Why something like that is not provided for by Apple is not know even by the big guy in the sky!
This is an older iPad model A1474 - iPad Air. I’ve never had any issues with it until updating to 11.4 and the 11.4.1 did not seem to fix my problem anyways on this iPad. If models of iPads get too old for some iOS, APPLE should suggest to this owners not to upgrade to the latest iOS because of possible issues. Unfortunately APPLE does not give you a choice, you just are constantly reminded that they have release a new iOS. As an IT person, APPLE should allow owners to roll-back an iOS if it creates problems. They could allow this by also stipulating that rolling back to older iOS may mean you have an older device and should consider upgrading it if problems occur with newer versions of iOS they are releasing. This way, both customers and APPLE have shown responsibility while deploying or forcing updates.
The closest Apple Store is about 4 hours away for us here!
If not the phone then certainly you. What I can't believe is how anyone can accept such customer unfriendly attitude. If Bill Gates gets to read this forum he really might be regretting saving the company from going bankrupt.
I have never come across any device that could not be rolled back. In fact my desktop will allow me to roll back upto 6 - 7 version upgrades. My nexus, Samsung & Xiaomi devices will allow al the way back to the original factory level OS. This could even be 3 - 4 major update versions. All this can be done from my desktop PC over a USB cable. Apple is the only one that will not allow or has managed to incorporate any method for rolling back the updates. My purchase was a reluctant one simply out of necessity. Will now look for other means /methods for communicating with my granddaughters.
@sven_frankfurt - Just curious whether that new "high-performance" battery resolved the excessive battery drain. My new phone with iOS 10.3.3 worked fine; it was an (unintended) "upgrade" to iOS 11.4.1 that's *decimated* the battery. It was INSTANTLY.
Like yours, mine loses half its life sitting doing nothing. (BTW, after many tests & tweakings, I've discovered that along with disabling every conceivable option, the only way to somewhat slow -- but not eradicate -- the excessive battery drain is to have the phone on Airplane Mode and Low Battery all day. Make you question why have an iPhone? Sure does!
